Martha’s Vineyard Fishing Report … May 23, 2010
The Magic of Tailing Blues!
The season is progressing nicely and shaping up to be another banner year. I have been out on the water most days during this last week and have noticed loads of bait in all varieties. The only thing lacking thus far has been squid which we hope has not been decimated yet again by the commercial fleets. Some reports have been coming in that they are not too happy about the numbers either. That can change quickly and the squid hounds may have full bellies soon. The bass are starting to populate the rips on the North Shore and out in Nantucket Sound but I haven’t seen frantic squid jumping out of the water trying to evade the hounds.
On one particular “research day” I was out alone and concentrated on the flooding tide at one of my favorite rips east of Oak Bluffs. The bass were present in decent numbers and would eagerly pounce upon a jumping minnow walked over the rip line. It was the first good sign of light tackle surface action from the boat this year. Nothing much over 30 inches but those bass were feisty as all get out.
I’ve taken out several trips for blues on the Cape side. There is something very magical about tailing blues in skinny water. We can catch all we want on both fly and light spin plugs and the anglers love it. It’s very visual and really gets us charged up. The fish cruise around in daisy chain formation with the lead fish being the largest. If you are good enough at it you can pick out the fish you want and then present a fly or plug in the right spot in its path to illicit an attack. What a blast!

Other reports coming in around the island from both shore and boat have been good. The west end is showing improvement and will soon be the preferred location for my trips as the bigger bass start to feed on the surface. Surf anglers are having success along most of the north and south shorelines and the rips at Wasque over on Chappy are producing well for them with both bluefish and stripers. About all I can say is that we are now in full swing as the Memorial Day weekend approaches.
