Martha’s Vineyard Fishing Report … June 30, 2010
A piscatorial cornucopia…
It’s that time in the season when bass and blues are just one option for an exciting fishing trip in Vineyard waters. Bass are still available despite an ever increasing water temperature but their patterns have definitely changed. We are now fishing an area that before now was never a bass spot. The hungry linesiders are gorging themselves on small sand eels also known as sandlances. Mixed in the impressive blitzes are bluefish ready to tear our Arkansas Shiner slugos or sparsely tied clousers to smithereens. You can score well when you run into this situation but patience and persistence is important as it takes many a throw into the fray to get tight.
On Saturday I had the pleasure of taking out Peter Sliwkowski and John Piekos. The two accomplished anglers just recently helped Team Martha’s Vineyard win the Vineyard/Nantucket surfcasting cup. What a great trip. They not only enjoyed the bass and blues we located but also had a blast jigging the bottom during slack tide for black sea bass and king sized scup. You don’t expect guys like that to have fun catching bottom fish but they were like two kids just starting out on their fishing passion.
The mission on Tuesday was to catch and keep enough fish to fed 14 family members who were vacationing in East Chop. The pressure was on leaving the dock but these three anglers had some none stop action that brought home the bacon. We started off with sandlance slurping bass and blues and then drifted the trenches of Vineyard Sound for some flatties and black sea bass. The cooler was filled with 2 bass, 5 bluefish, 7 fluke and a half dozen black sea bass and the mission was accomplished as a cornucopia of piscatorial delight was filleted at the dock.
There has been no greater pleasure this season then for me to take out my grandchildren from Florida for a day fishing. My daughter Patricia and her two sons; Sterling and Cameron did a fine job on the briney and Sterling managed to win the day’s angling cup
The Martha’s Vineyard VFW Fluke Tourney is July 10 and 11. LOADS of prizes are awarded to the kids who participate and the adult team with the heaviest catch retains “bragging rights” for the year. It’s a blast and I highly recommend you give it a try. Peter Hermann of the VFW runs the event with a wonderful committee of dedicated fluke fishermen. Call the VFW in Oak Bluffs or stop by for details.
