Martha’s Vineyard Fishing Report … June 23, 2010
Patterns are Starting to Change…

The last week has been excellent but as we move toward the end of June the fishing patterns start to change. For the last seven days we have been finding bass in the same place and munching on the same small bait. Each trip up-island has been rewarded with lots of surface feeding action and cooperative bass. Yesterday the term cooperative has been dropped from the reports as large pods of krill slurping bass have been very hard to trick. Moving around and finding fish on sandeels and juvenile herring has been much more effective. Today we almost took a skunking as the weather kept us from travelling far and the fish we did find were not persuaded to bite. It was a rude awakening but we did manage to boat an “eleventh hour” linesider and thus avoided the skunk. The size of bass has also started to change as we started off with fish up to 35” and now we’re satisfied with fish in the upper 20 inch range. Perhaps the current weather front pushing through will shake things up a bit.

On Friday, June 18 I had the pleasure of taking out a Swedish couple and they were very accomplished fly anglers. Daniel and Anita scored well and we managed several “Swedish Doubles”. Although their English was almost non-existent, we discovered that when it came to fishing, hand signals were all they needed and their skill did the rest. The trip was a blast and now I can check off Sweden from my list of international anglers onboard. When we said our goodbyes at the dock Anita gave me some Swedish chocolate and Daniel insisted we take some mint-flavored snuff together. That was an experience my nose and I won’t soon forget!

Two of my trips this past week were three generational i.e., grandpa, son, and grandson. Each year I have several of these types of trips and I really enjoy them. I keep a supply of Captain’s trophies onboard for the grandsons and they get quite a treat winning it and being presented it at the dock. Hopefully the trip becomes a lifetime memory for all three generations.
