Mako fishing on the bank or Mudhole

OK. so this year, I'd like to get into a mako or two. I am gearing up for it now and am new to this fishery.

If I were to go off Stellwagon or the Mudhole, when do the makos start showing up?

I am fully willing to put my time into the game, just want to know when the game begins.

i wouldn't be doing any mako fishing on the bank unless you want hundreds of dog fish in minutes, you could get one but that slick will attract a lot of dogs and would be clearing a lot of lines. If you happen to see one then ya throw some bait in the water, but gotta leave the bank and go east

Beleave it or not...when ever we shark fish east of the bank we never get covered up in doggies. Lots of bluesharks, some mako's, and we hooked a nice thresher last year.

last few dedicated shark trips we did to tune the boat before the edge season, we were ridiculously dogged up. Especially days with slow drift. They even gang up on Bluefish and just eat it down to the rack...

I'll second this qoute, while I wouldn't start a chum slick right on top of the bank, if you travel just a few more miles east of the bank the shark fishing can be pretty damn good. I tried it a few times last year and never caught anything but they were there and a couple of my friends had sucess in the same areas I was fishing. The only tough thing for me was to stick with my chumslick when I saw acres of tuna launching out of the water just a few hundred yards away.

Agree with (Dan)TM and (Jeff) HR jr. While sharking is considered to be better south of the islands there are plenty of sharks to be had in mass bay, and people shark fish east of the bank all the time. Like stated i would be looking east of the bank not on the bank. Also as far as mass bay is conserned, you allways need to be prepared for big makos. The waters north and east of the cape are typicaly cooler then south of the island and the larger sharks are more tolerant of the cooler water which tends to hold the bigger girls.

Sharking tends to start getting good when the water warms up to 60's. They can be had in cooler water but i usualy wait till then. I start looking in mid june and by july it is in full swing.

Now for the saftey tip: If you have never targeted sharks or been sharking, take someone with you who has. Threshers and particularly Makos can be a bit dangerous at boat side. A Thresher boatside can ***** slap you at boat side so hard it can break bones or knock you out cold with a tail that is almost as long as its body, and it can do it before you can say "oh Shit". Makos, well besides a mouth full of razor sharp teeth and an "i don't give a shit attitude" are known to jump and be unpredictable, and have been know to jump in the boat, And you do not want a live pissed off make in the boat. I have also noticed they like to do a "Drive by" giving the boat a look which will sometimes give you the feeling that they are ready to take, When infact they have only begun. You hit it with the flyer durring the swimm by and you have a total shit storm on your hands right next to the boat. Even a big blue can be a handfull if you are inexperienced. I would advise targeting blue sharks a few times to get some sharking under your belt.

Sharking is my favorite type of fishing. It can be booring at times but exciting when you get a mako jumping 12' in the air doing twisting back flips 100 yards away. But it can also be very dangerous if you dont know what you are doing or what to expect.

Good luck in your shark quest and above all remember when sharking saftey is always first.

Good info right there....Makos have some serious attitudes, last year I released one, about a 6 footer after a amazing airshow it put on, as it swam away after I cut the leader, it was about 10 feet from the boat when it turned quickly and came back at the boat attempting to bite the side of it, or possible my hands which where placed on the side watching it swim away, there was eye contact for sure...Mean SOB's..
