making cod jigs from old window sash weights?

Hello all.

Here comes one of many hair-brained ideas during the off season. I spoke with a commercial cod rod and reel fisherman and he said he uses old window sash weights rather than traditional jigs. He wasn't that clear on how to rig them.

Has anyone heard of this practice and could provide any details or pics?

I hope to get out for tuna late next week.

We use to use old butter knives, or alum pipe we'd get from old lawn chairs to make jigs years back....they all catch fish....

Best Catch: The next bite on a jig.
I'm going to guess he was melting them and pouring them into vike style mold or something. Aluminum tape (like used in HVAC work) makes a good faux chrome.

There a bunch of those kicking around my grandfather and father used back in the day on Coxes... a lot cheaper than butterfly jigs to boot!

I doubt it. Old window weights were made from cast iron and to melt that down you need a serious furnace to get it melting point.
