    mahi - how far?

Hey guys, I have been reading some of the posts with references to catching Mahi with keen interest. I've done a fair amount of fishing in the stream off NC but I'm not familiar with getting to the Mahi grounds south of the Cape (or even where they are exactly) and would sure like to add that to my bag of tricks. My only familiarity S. of the Cape is running to BFT grounds E of Chatham from the Bass River ramp, so I'm a newbie to that area.

How far do you have to go to get a reasonable shot at some dolphin? Is the whole game centered around watching for a loop of warm water to come in close or do we get mahi inside on a regular basis - if so what temp break to target? My CC's range would limit me to about 30 miles off MV or Nantucket. Is this just wishin' to put a round peg in a square hole or do I have a chance to engage in this fishery ("engage" means to semi-reliably get into mahi!!)

I need to be pointed in the right direction. Thanks for your thoughts.

    Red Herring,

I have seen mahi as close as within sight of nomans (maybe 5 miles off) hanging around inshore lobster gear. They often move into the Claw area (15 miles south of Nomans or so) in August once the water hits 70 and is fairly clean. I would keep an eye on the report and see what is coming in from the Claw, Cox's ledge and the Fingers all of which are w/ini reach on a nice day for you.

When these areas have Mahi they usually hold football BFT also.

I was hand feeding a 20 pound Mahi last Saturday During the Monster shark tournament. We were at the Star. The water temp was 75 and He was eating everthing I threw at him. Butterfish, Mackeral, Pogies, and Bluefish Chunks. Did not have a rod set up to catch him on.
From the Star west you have very warm Cobalt blue stream water and would not be surprised and have heard rumors of them being near Nomans and the Claw and the dump area.
We fished 78 degree water on Friday at the Dump and we saw flying fish and Ballyhoo so there are probobly Mahi there aswell.

    Mahi

We've had Mahi (chix) in the lobster gear right behind Block Island in past years when that warm water moves in. It was around Labor day if I remember correctly.

A blast to catch on light spinning gear. The trick was to hook one, leave it hooked and stick the rod in the holder. The fish was going nuts sub surface and attracted the school. After that it was like pulling weeds

    Dan,
Chris and i were out sharking 2 weeks before OBMST just south of the claw in low to mid 70* water and had tons of flying fish and halfbeaks with us most of the day. Water was a bit stained but the mahi should show in that area soon as the water clears a bit..
