Looking to switch to mono...for this trip

    hey guys
i'm taking a group of 15 (mostly first timers) on a party boat groundfishing trip in april and i really want to use my own gear, howver, i'm not able to use braid. i'm looking to put a top shot of mono or respool the entire reel, but i need some suggestions as to what lb test i should respool with???

would someone please offer up some suggestions? given the party boat we'll be going on, seems will be 20-30 miles from plymouth, fishing the bank. seems mostly for haddock and hopefully some cod.

    really appreciate the help.
    thanks

what boat are you fishing on?

Most (if not all) allow braid. Depending on the depth of fishing you can put a 20ft top shot of mono. This will allow you cut and re-tie without affecting the braid.

...in a perfect world, I would try and find a boat that allowed braid and would be chartering a 6pk instead of a party boat - but this trip isn't about me, but rather a 'Fishin' Club' at my office that i put together. and to be honest, the excitement that these guys have to go catch some fish (some have never caught anything salty), it's worth changing things up!!

anyways, Capt John out of plymouth. they seem to be the least expensive and that's what these guys are looking for given their experience.

    thanks for the input!

i went out with him last year with a bunch of guys..good time and a preety good bite. I used braid and im almost positive a few others did aswell. with the amount of people on the boat it was a little tricky untangling and such but if you get there eirly grab the pulpit if possible.

I'd suggest grab a spool of 40lb ande and load up some reels. Caught tons of fish in the past on mono. Alot more than I have braid. Pre braid fishing but ofcourse the fishery was better then I guess. But I also know some old timers who have stuck with mono. Whatever puts fish on the deck. Ande is good quality at a good price too. 40lb is the right choice in my opinion. Tests out over 50.

Good luck my man. I know the feeling of having someone who catches a dogfish get all excited and think they caught a "SHARK!". Good call on April before the groundfish move on. Should get in to some reel nice haddock & cod.
