This is 4 Novembers in a row and 6 out of the last 9 years; ie the history of how long I have owned this boat. November's easy if you pick a day; I want to extend into December next
The big one which Jackson got to pull on hit a naked medium chin weighted ballyhoo way way back; that immediately caused a double up on a pink bar just inside it. The birdpile we didn't reach was insane and I've seen a lot of birdpiles. 4 boats around the pile, 4 boats including Chumtini all hooked up and going in different directions with an acre's worth of tuna breaking unmolested because no one could get there .
if we weren't doubled up and in the midst of a cluster I was going to drop a jig down; the screen was something I've only seen once before; a solid red 100' mass not just of bait; but of tuna ripping slashes and holes in the bait; with tuna streaks above and below the mass. We'd have been tripled up in no time and probably lost all 3.
Damon pulled an 85"/ 368# out of it 100 yards away - the one we snapped off at the boat was an easy 70" fish. Good fish out there right now.
We had another hit a naked ballyhoo wwb again while trying unsuccessfully to get back to the birdpile. No one else wanted to deal w./ it on a 30 so I got the honors
Nice work Larry, and same thing with Damon from Castafari. So it doesn't look like you season is over by a long shot. Get back out there and get that 70 incher back to the boat! Maybe one of these days I will hop on if you are looking for crew again. A December bluefin up here would be nice.
not sure - dock word said JC's Hyannis tourney winner got 12$/pound and that "Chatham rod caught tuna" is the rage at the west coast auctions.
The shape on the fish was excellent and the fat content of the one we cut up next to it was excellent also.
As for season over, most likely; the risks of a 50 mile trip in dark 49 degree water, combined with the chill on the water make it aweful hard to go out unless its a warm FAC bluebird day. I am uncomfortable risking a line in the props and having to go in or put someone in 48 degree water, even with a full 3-4-5 wetsuit on board. I'm happy to end on an up note, not a down one!
Also - we deliberately popped off the 70 incher; one on the deck already was plenty and killing it to brag would have been a waste.
