    THATS A MONKFISH???????????

HELL THEY SELL MONKFISH WITH OINSTRUCTIONS TO COOK IT AT A SEAFOOD MARKET IN GREENSBORO NC............I DO REMEMBER THEY CALLED IT "POOR MANS LOBSTER"

THAT AIN'T RIGHT.......AND WE COMPLAIN ABOUT COMMERCIAL FOISHERMEN....HELLL THAT THING MUST EAT THE CRAP OUT OF SOME FISH....

I LOVE THIS FORUM......HELL I MAY MOVE UP NORTH JUST TO BE NEAR NANSY.......I MEAN THE COLDWATER

ALL COMPLIMENTARY THOUGHTS HERE SHOE SHE SHORE IS EASY ON DA EYES
The monkfish really are cool to see in person- they look like they're from another planet. You're right though, they aren't nearly as easy on the eyes as Nansy....but the bite is about the same .

You may not have to move up here to get closer...if she likes the area as much as I did, we may see what the job market is like down there....then its all over

    Talk about TUDE

We brought one in last season and pitched it into a tote of cod we had on deck.

The Sumbitch ate one of the cod while it was in the box...no chit

When you try to fillet that bucket-o-snot the friggin skin is like kryptonite...even a scalpel isn't sharp enough

    JW...that's one bitchn Goose

Now how'd it get it's name

    World Record Goosefish...

    49lbs
Caught in 1991 by Ms. Nancy Regimbald
    Oqunquit, Maine..
Probably outside Isle of Shoal or Jeffries area...

Ours was about 10lb from record...

One son of a ***** to fillet for sure, actaully only part that is edible is section of tail, rest is ONE BOG SNOTTY MESS, that sucker was built for the duration
It actually has 3 levels of teeth, mouth teeth, inside mouth teeth and she has another set of teeth in her throat, can basically eat/crunch and swallow most anything she comes across..

    Monkfish....

Becasue of her looks and hassle to handle was considered a trash fish for many years, actually when you see it in market almost always filleted (because who would buy and eat that if they knew what it looked like)

So back in the day when know body else wanted it the poor and simple Monks; I believe in Europe...Ireland etc, would take it from the fishermen for their tables...

Hence Monkfish, the only group who wanted it at one time...

Some marketing genius came up with the idea to call it monkfish. Goosefish ws turning the city folks off from buying it. Probably the same guy that renamed the patagonian tooth fish as Chilean sea bass.

Probably the same reason Wolf fish are also known as ocean catfish. Funny how it goes from a dog to a cat

Couple guys i know who dive have seen Wolfish while diving off NJ. Very difficult to spear though. they retract pretty quickly back to their holes.

Monkfish, now those divers take every now and then. I saw one that had to be the size of a garbage can lid while diving last season. I though about going back down and sticking it with my pole spear. That was until one of the divers on the boat said they will slice you to ribbons with those teeth if you don't handle them right. They are the original "slimer"

    supposedly they taste excellent though.

    filleting the monkfish is simple:
cut tail by crossing back with a knife between the horns then go behind the pectorals to get the "scallop meat". once you have the tail take a bucket of water with some ice throw the tail in and get it cold slice down the tail and peel back the skin. saute, grill whatever awesome meat. oh yeah cheaks cut em out and fry better than cod cheaks
