    Library Expansion

Summer is the time to fish, not to read about fishing...but not for me this year.

I am in my own perfect storm: two kids under 5, a new house down to the studs and the foundation for the addition was poured yesterday, and a new role at work that (for the second year in a row) has most of the deliverables due beginning of October. All good stuff; but all will contribute to few opportunities to do anything in the blocks of time necessary to get offshore. That, combined with only 2 boats where I am on "the crew list", will lead to few, if any, opportunities to get offshore this year.

The good news is with my new commute I have time to read. So, I have decided this will be the summer I learn to put Dick Albert, Harvey Leonard and Bruce Schwegler to shame and try to match witts with the likes of Mike Wankum and, local legend, Larry Backman . And, when not honing my skills as a self tought meteorologist, I am going to learn to read the Canyons better than Sir Edmond Halley could read the skies.

For Northeast weather forecasting I found nothing specific (do you have anything?). I am planning to start with:
    - Weather Forecasting Handbook, and
    - Guide to Weather Forecasting
    (any feedback on these?)

For the Canyons I found even less, but did find:
    - Geology of the United States' seafloor: the view from GLORIA (anyone taken a look? at $57 for a used copy I think I will wait for definative feedback or a borrowed copy), and
    - The continental slope off New England: A long-range sidescan-sonar perspective (anyone taken a look?)

Please add to (or subtract from) the list. I spent 20 years sailing competitively so I have a functional (yet rusty) understanding of weather and how it works, but have never attempted forecasting. For the Canyon's my knowledge is limited to a Captain Seagull's chart, some reading in Big Game Fishing magazine from a couple of years ago, and a couple of trips to West Atlantis, Atlantis, and Veatch.

Dashew wrote a couple sailing weather books - one of which "Surviving the Storm" I found very informative.

Canyon wise - google your way around "Alvin" "WHOI" "Bear Seamount" "Lydonia" etc and you will find some fascinating stuff on line. You want to know where they drilled on Georges bank and what they found? . Its out there.

Thanks Larry...now I know how you cracked the weather forecasting code. With the recent forecasts there may be more people reading than fishing South this weekend.
