My son and I left Sesuit Harbor at 6am yesterday for our final tuna trip of the year. This was our first year tuna fishing, and we had gone 0 for 6 in trips prior to yesterday. We left the harbor and steamed out about a mile to a spot that I had heard had macks. We jigged up about a dozen or so of the macks and headed to the SW corner.
We arrived at the corner at about 8:15 and were greeted with about 4-6 foot, but managable swells. We put in the macks and slow trolled them until about 10:30 with no luck. There were a bunch of birds working by the draggers, but we did not see any tuna. We headed to the SE corner at 10:30 and the we did not see much at first, but I spotted a whale to the northeast. We headed that way and put our macks under balloons, with one at 10 feet, and another at 30 feet. We arrived to about 9 or 10 feeding whales in the area. As 2 whales passed about 30 feet behind our boat, the TLD 50 went off. My son, who is 14, strapped into the harness and less than 30 seconds later, the other rod went off. The fish on the second rod took about 2-300 yards of line before the line snapped at the mono topshot.(No more mono topshots from Bass Pro) My son fought the fish for about 30 minutes and I gaffed it and together we hoisted a very fat, 64 inch fish into the boat. I bled and gutted the fish, and we headed back through 2-3 ft seas on the bank and in the bay and arrived back at Sesuit at 3pm.
The fish taped out at 64 inches, with a 49 inch girth. Using the length and girth to weight conversion, the fish was estimated to weigh 190lbs, a fat fish.
The TLD 50 performed well for an inexpensive reel, and the Shimano Tallus rod was great.
It was a great end to the season, and my son and I definitely are now addicted.
