Labrador Catches Two BFT in the SW Corner Today

In the wake of the Nor'easter that just passed through the Gulf of Maine, the Labrador (member of Mass Bay Guides) caught two recreational size tuna in the SW corner of Stellwagen Bank this morning. Rolling in the swells of the ebbing storm and trolling with Taylor Sears squid bars, we hooked up a beautiful 52" BFT that we kept for the charter party. A while later we hooked another beauty - a 56" BFT which we returned to the ocean. While the 50-something-inch BFT were popping up all around us, there was a fantastic whale shows going on. Plenty of everything swimming in the gear at the high ground.

The little tuna are here and hungry - and they're happily chewing on rubber which is great for our charter business. Looking forward to bending a pole out on the bank with tomorrow's MBG charter.

Great report, great day for your sports.

Amazing what a 5-6 degree temp drop will do. Let the fall fishing begin.

except bluefin regulate their own temperature, its amazing what a noreast blow will do with churning evrything up and blowing more bait in the area causing a chew

I know the fish regulate their own temp, but wouldnt it make sense that the faster they have to swim in the colder water to keep it where they want it, they have to feed more? Always wondered that.

Well, you've gotta figure, that even humans, who have the luxury of AC,will gravitate to where they are most comfortable, right? If it's less work,to be comfortable, say to the North, that's where I'd be.

This goes a lot further than bluefin regulating their own temp. It really revolves around increasing and decreasing oxygen levels from the arterial blood to the gradient blood. There are a few other species that are also endothermic. Some sharks, swordfish(who can comfortably sit in a hybernate-like state in 34 degree water temps) all tunas, and blue marlin. With that being said I think that the bluefin have a much wider range of temps that they will hunt food in vs. other tunas. Food definitely is the major role player here as to what they do and where they go. Let the fall fishing games begin!

Oh, and way to go SOUP!

The NE wind drops the water temperature but more importantly it alters the currents throughout Cape Cod Bay which moves bait.

The outflow pipe research data that is still available from the 90s - and the testing points all over MA bay is an interesting read.

There's no coincidence that certain winds act to improve the fishing while sustained winds in other directions push fish to other areas.

If tuna and other pelagics didn't care about temperature differences either because of bait of comfort nobody would fish temp breaks.
