    Knives and Gunfights

On Tuesday we hooked another giant in the same area as last week but on a Penn 50 and custom rod. Short story is after an hour fight during which the fish made countless blistering runs at the boat I see color 30 ft down. Climb up on the gunwall for a better look and see a monster circling. Jump down to get the poon (no need for a tape on this one) and I hear POW. Fish made a hard dive for the bottom on a short line and snapped the custom rod in half like a match stick even though the drag was only at Full Strike (28lbs).

130s are going on the boat...leaving the play toys at home...these fish are just too big.

No disrespect intended, but I do not understand how that rod broke. Drag at 28lbs, fish near the boat so no extra drag from line. My simple thinking says even a large fish on a blistering run would have simply taken line or snapped the leader. Maybe the rod may have been defective? Great story though.

    thoughts? Explainations?

    Too Bad

    George,

Sorry to hear that, no idea what happened and to me it sounds very strange. Then again very large fish with a 50 class rod maybe time to go bigger and better.
