    Kite Fishing

Been hearing a lot of positives when fishing with Kites around our area. I would like to get something going that could present our baits in a different manner so I'd like to try this technique. Where can I find a Kite, clips etc. We have a good amount of rods probably something we can fly one on. But need advice on how and where to outfit.
    Thanks for the help,
    Chris

I bought a kite fishing rig to use from the surf since I don't have a boat. I got all the equipment directly from an Australian manufacturer www.caughtinflight.com.au

In the US, alltackle.com sells all the kite fishing gear: rods, reels, kites, release clips, line, snaps, kite floats, etc

There are alot of manufactures of kites all good. There are also several different kits and typs of rigging from having the release clips directly on the kite line, to having drop lines from the kite line to a release clip. Basicly it is like fishing a downrigger but going up

As far as kites go by far the easiest kite I have flown is the kite sold by the Boston Big Game Fishing Club. I got mine from Steve James himself but i think there are several shops that sell them retail. They are about 30 bucks and practily fly themselves. There are a few tutorials on the web for kite fishing. Do a search for "Kite Fishing" you will find hours of interesting reading..

Kite fishing can be exciting and not as difficult as it sounds with not a big investment.

If you do it i would consider a KITE ROD they are alot shorter then a typical "Fishing" rod and it makes a difference. OH YA definately leash it into the rod holder. Kites have been known to pull the rod out of the holder. In fact it is one of the things Steve James warned me about with his kite..

You know, my I received a Boston Big Game kite as a "gift for the kids" in the 2008 OBMST Captains Bag from the Captain of the boat I fished during the tourney. I didn't know what it was and never took the time to figure it out. I also never took the kids out to fly kites in the past year.

    I am not to smart....

Now I see this post, it all make sense. It has been sitting on the floor of my closet for a year. I hope I didn't screw it up!

    wayward, wrong direction!

When a fish hits a kite bait it is pulled down, not up and out of the holder. The wind pressure pulls the kiterod up, a fish never can. I like braid as my kite "string", , make sure you have good size eyes so a swivel may pass through the guides in and out. All I did was load 300 yds, 150 yds backing, to first swivel, then 50 more yds to second swivel, 50 yds to 3rd swivel, and final 50yds to BBswivel for clipping to your kite. You can snapa release clip into each swivel as it goes out, giving you the option of running 3 baits off 1 kite. I ran 2 on Wednesday and it was a nice option. Gives you 2 baits upwind while running a bait or 2 off ballons, or flatlines in the other direction. Not sure if the pic will post, but it shows the kite rod and results!

For starting out I bought an Aftco kite (low-medium wind with two sets of spars) at CMS for about 90 bucks. Used a jigging rod with Spectra for kite rod and used rubber band as stopper for clips.

Very easy, took about 3 minutes to set up and make it work. Well worth it.

Fffiisshh0 Hit it. The kite rod is simply a UPRIGGER it is not used to fish with it just holds the line (via a release clip) from the rod you are fishing with up and out of the water keeping your bait on the surface and all the fishing line from the rod out of the water. When a fish hits it releases from the kite (Like a downrigger) and leaves you free to fight the fish with nothing in the water but the line you are fishing with.
