JB Block Island 2009 Sharkfest

It's been a busy week.

Ernie and Eric joined Deb and me for JB's 1st annual Block Island Sharkfest this past Sunday and Monday. We headed over to the Basin on Saturday and returned yesterday. Good to meet up and talk with Capt Bill from the Billfish and some other familiar offshore guys.

Kerry, Kyle and company ran another fine tournament, this being their 1st shark only event. Hopefully it'll grow. This one was small, with only 31 boats, but it was a good time with decent sharking weather.

We started out day-one down near the Butterfish. Decided to try and find some better water and hopefully the right sharks. We moved around and finished the day up around the Acid Barge. Did a decent amount of rocking and rolling early with the waves about 3 seconds apart. Ended up with only 1 Blueshark for our effort on Sunday. Eric made quick work of that fish.

We found an area full of life that day and it was there the next as well. Bait, birds, whales and bluefin present. Set up the day 2 slick nearby. An hour of chumming and Deb got her B-Day shark present - a day late. She returned it because it was the wrong size and color. (blue, short of the tourney minimum). Eric got some stick work in piercing that fish a with a nicely placed tag and then de-hooked. Later, we had a very large fin in the slick that we didn't positively ID but guessed was a White.

Overall, we didn't catch much this time out but had a great time during the tourney. Looking forward to the next time out.
