I bet more than 90% of the charter boats would fail a complete documentation check and safety inspection. I am also willing to put money that the inspector or boarding officer would not be up to date on all documentation and regulations. Just pick a rule and you will find violators Daily mission orders for tomorrow. Lets pick.... Epirb documentation....LOL.
Greg, an EPIRB is not required for a charter boat, now those that have one need to have it so it will float free with a hydrostatic release (up to date) and have it registered with NOAA and make sure the battery is within the date of replacement. It is required if you plan on selling a fish.
yes it is the boat i fish on have everything for com and have been boarded by the coast guard . i bet a lot don't have the all the insurance that is needed for chatering
I think the charter regulations should be alot more similiar to the Commercial regs.
Epirb and Raft should be standard - seems crazy to me that you wouldn't have those when you're taking out paying customers. And not one of those 4 man rafts - I've always wondered if it's cold and you're on a 6 pack and you go down - "which 4 get the raft?". Not a situation anyone should ever be in.
Happy, if it is an uninspected charter boat that is not selling fish an EPIRB and RAFT are not mandatory equipment. I carry the EPIRB and an eight man raft and would not be without them offshore. Jay I agree that the regs should be stricter to be honest with you.

now if we could just get the law changed about raft inspection EVERY Year. just had mine done. can't we do it every 2 yrs? CG does theirs every 3 yrs i believe. comment Dave.
I think we are going a little off topic here but the CG inspects their own rafts in accordance with the CFR. In other words, they are inspected every year and follow the same procedures. They have a vast amount of lifesaving equipment on board including flares on vest, whistles, signal mirrors and other items in case they go overboard.
The regs are written by congress and enforced by CG, the CG does not make the laws. I need to pick my raft up early next week myself in Eastie. I also wish it was a two year inspection but I believe the raft packers have pushed the lawmakers to make this an annual event $$$$$$$.
Dave
I thought Cat I was required for boats over 36'. Less than 36' can use a manual Cat II.
The battery on my Cat II just expired. If I have the wrong type for my Pursuit, now would be a good time to know
