I've been semi seriously investigating building a Northern Bay or Wesmac 38 with probably more or less the same feature list as you. One additional requirement I had was a 22-23 knot cruise speed which equated to 200 extra HP.

Every piece of data I have accumulated says that to build out a 38' DE offshore ready and capable is 4-500K. Sure one can start at 250-300K but by the time I started thinking about what I wanted versus a low end boat the 10 and 20K increments just kept piling on. Proper deck hatches and windows, bow thruster, generator, AC and heat, etc. all adds cost in a hurry.

I'd drill really hard into that quote down to the detail of detail - number of batteries; exhaust type, number of fuel filters, tanks size etc. I know I was very surprised how quick things I took for granted added up.

Hey Greg, definitely give Chris Stevens at Sterling Finance a call. He's from Cohasset, great guy, and even if he's not able to help you, can probably point you in the right direction. His office #800-286-8073. Also, maybe check with the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen association in Chatham, MA. They have a lot of resources for commercial guys.

Thanks for all the Input keep it coming!

Everyone has given me some great ideas and tips

Freezer plate is awesome thats the ticket.

Jay I will call your dad

Scott Financial has a calculator to figure payments with interest and years that is great. www.scottboatloan.com/loancalculator.html

I know the entire build will cost more than 300k but I figure I will use my own money, blood and sweat to finish but at least the boat is commercial ready. I was a finish carpenter for about 20 years. Plus in the winter now I do electronics.

"Dude" bow thrusters are the cats ass even when drifting.

I am also considering partnership with some of the guys that work with me now. ( but I would rather do it on my own)

I was hoping someone who has built recently or had a boat built recently could shed some light Pro or Con.

I would consider buying a boat with this type of design if it was just right.

Awesome advise from everyone keep it going I will let you all know how I am making out.

PS; "Bunn" Coffee Maker on board.

go read noreast.com's boating forum. There are a ton of of threads about downeast buildouts there as well as a bunch of DE zealots who can help in many directions.

What are you thinking for power and cruise speed?

Nor East is a great thread I have been planning this for about three years. I think I have read every artical out there. I do have a complete list for the build right down to fuel lines and running lights, Windows, hatches, types of core, stringers, bulkheads, stairs, ETC....

Power is probly going to be in the 470 to 500 Hp Cat or Yanmar. Dave is a Cat Mechanic so it will probably be Cat.

Looks like we will get 500 Gallons in her depending on how big I build the fish box. And Water tanks.

The heavier (Full interior finish) 40 footers they have already built have a cruise of 20 kts with a Yanmar 470
