I'm hoping you are right Keith, cause I finally convinced my dad to take our boat out there, but we need the weather to cooperate. It really sucked packing all the ice, bait and rods on the boat just to take them off but like you said I think we made the right call. The Southport 28 is out there now hopefully putting the slay on.

Yes, that was us heading out into the sound from waquoit preparing to take a beating. Man the sound sucks... You guys have a nice ride in that 34 fountain.

Tunacious, yeah that was early in the morning on our one day trip of the year to Veatch. Fish ate the old islander ballyhoo long and just torched out line... We were lucky with a corner of the mouth hookset on the mono leader. Guy holding the fish is 6-2. I think it probably went 80.

A 31T is plenty of boat for a canyon run as long as you respect the weather. You guys will slay in your ride.

Not to be a cynic but I’ve fished with Larry on somebody else’s boat and he’s one focused gamesman. He’s very safety conscious and more often than not the guy gets into fish and this trip seems to be no different.

Let’s recap. Larry waited until the best weather window opened loads the boat up with gear, crew, provisions and ice. Makes a long run to the grounds all the while watches his fuel consumption to insure safe return.

Hit the area that was selected to start the hunt, hit sloppy water, "Fish On" within 10 minutes of hitting the spot. (Nice targeting Larry!)

Then one more yellowfin was picked up before nightfall.

After that a junior angler was able to pick one off on the jig as you actually saw yellowfin so close to the lights that you could identify them, ( I’m sure seeing yellowfin crash the lights sucked) but nobody else was able to capitalize, caught on a spinning rod no less. How sweet is that!

Nothing more on the night drifts but that’s fishing.

You guys nailed 2 more yellowfin on the morning troll, Picked up 3 Mahi for the grill, had a nice calm night drift, while cappy was watching for ships coming within ¼ mile of crushing your ass, all the while cappy left the boat in gear and tried to figure out why the engines wouldn’t start as the water from the scuppers was filling the bilge. I’ve seen others not realize that the throttles were in gear as they tried to start the engines so that’s nothing new.

Plus in addition to all that you guys had time to set out a marlin spread and seriously target that species. Good job.

All the while first time anglers made memories of a lifetime.

Let's count 6 yellers caught on the troll and one casting. 3 Mahi and a calm night, yep it just isn’t worth going out.

I'm far from a wise ass, but as many times as I've gotten out this year that beats me by 7 tuna and 3 Mahi.

I read Larry's post this afternoon before coming across this post and I can relate to what he wrote. Even though his problem was human error, the fact that the guy had little rest may have contributed to the throttle position issue, but the way he reacted setting up help and the response he got for that radio call and ultimately problem solving the problem is just an indication that he has his priorities straight. Because once you're beyond a certain point it's not all about filling the box. It's about what if.

The fact that you filled the box to the point where ice management was considered just tells me that the trip was a successful trip. Especially after hearing how few boats caught any more than what you guys caught over the Sunday/Monday time frame.

Way to go Larry on your 74th successful trip.

May you be covered up in big eye tuna and marlin on your 75th trip.

Fortunate One, forgive me I'm a little confused by this post. I did not fish with Larry, I was on my boat. Also did not mean to give the impression that it was a bad trip. As I said, it was a good trip, we just didn't get anything really exotic. We have been lucky this year to catch some bigeyes, wahoo and marlin, just not on this trip. I still had an incredible time, the best part was getting two junior anglers into some canyon tuna. I echo your sentiments on LB, he is a very experienced canyon fisherman who has helped me on many occassions.

    Please accept my apologizes.

After reading Larry's post in your thread I made the mistake of assuming you were on Larry's boat.

None the less, we all take things for granted when it comes to canyon fishing.

Personally every canyon trip for me is an "E" ticket.

To me it's never strictly about the exotics or filling the box. To me it's always been about the trip, the people, the experience.

So to you Keith J, I sincerely wish your spread get covered with Big Eye tuna on the troll in the morning and a grander Marlin in the afternoon.

    Catch em up,
    Mike

    Gotcha. No worries!

Your absolutely right. Canyon trips are incredible experiences, even the slow ones are more than worth it in my book...
