    For "Maya" at Hydro

Drifting across the Canyon with that many boats and noone on watch was as careless and stupid stunt as Ive witnessed in alot of years on the water!! FYI, your radar can be set with an alarm if you are within a certain distance from an object. Suggest you learn how to use it!! Even if you set yours at 10 feet, it still would have sounded!! With the rollers and waves Sat nite, a collision could have been pretty ugly!
We laid on the horn, yelled and screamed at the top of our lungs from 100 plus yds out, 1 guy stumbled on deck. Im guessing it wasnt the capt, because no actions were taken by this guy. I fired 1 engine and ran full bore in reverse to avoid being hit by this guy. I did not want to cut my anchor line! He missed us by less than 10 feet, and only because I moved the boat!! Appreciate all your gear you left behind!
Not sure what would go through someones head to be out there and conduct themselves in that manner? Its dangerous enough out there as it is.

WOW...........That could have been really disastrous good job on your part avoiding the inevitable. Just never ceases to amaze me the knuckleheads out on the water.

ugh- wasn't there, sounds like a bad scene. I don't run radar on clear nights but make sure someone is periodically scanning down wind for potential static boats to drift downwards. I would never trust my radar on a night like that anyways to anyone but me - each time I moved back up sea to reset I was losing everything inside the inner half of the display to sea clutter.

On a drifting rolling boat a radar is going to be useless for anyone other than an expert actively working the ranges and gains.

Someone has to be on deck at all time and alert - inviolate rule for me.

Welll, if you saw it coming from that far away and had you been doing what you would have liked the other guy to do, I'm thinking there would have been nothing to worry about. Takes both sides...

The nights are shorter this time of year so there is no excuse to not have 2 people on deck alert.

The alarm is a good backup but you need to have people working the chucker and lines along with watching your position.

    yup..

last trip, steaming back from the tails, a huge sled, bound for the west came from a clear overtaking position to cut us off. 90 miles out, wide open ocean, and still can't adhere to the rules. would have been a 5deg correction on his part to take our stern.

Probably no one on the bridge running on Auto.... ass clowns.

Hey animal, go **** yourself. If a boat is bearing down on you and your best play to avoid a collision is to drop off the ball and pick it up after the "idiot" has passed, then you do it. Sitting there yelling to no avail makes no sense. WHen faced with that, you take action-well, maybe not you, but intelligent ppl do... ...

    Easy fellas...

Clearly the guy drifting without a watch in an area known to be "congested" with other boats is putting himself and others at risk.

Imagine if "Maya" drifted all the way into the shipping lanes. It would be a nice Darwinian moment when a chinese flagged container ship outbound from NYC steamed up on him at 20 kts.

Jeopardizing your boat, your crew, and the lives of others out of carelessness or laziness makes you an A-hole in my book.

One other perspective... what if Fisho had a BIG fish on and Captain Drifty caused it to break off. Would he be more or less of an ass?
