Gulf of Maine Groundfish Slam

Well, headed out yesterday for the first run of the season and started the summer off right. While reports of monster cod were being talked about south of the shoals, we decided not to go after the spawning population or deal with the crowds. Instead we headed to the mudhole to try our luck. Calm seas, sunny skies, and fair winds were only topped by great company and good fishing. Jigs were the ticket, as nearly all fish couldn't resist our hammered diamond jig/cod fly combo or a flat sided butterfly.

By the end of the day we had found our keeper cod, haddoc, and even a nice wolf fish to complete the slam. Later on we cooked them all up a few different ways, washed them down with cocktails, and topped off the night with some of Nansea's chocolate covered strawberries. To copy the Nicks' phrase- life is good, no complaints.

Nice job Shoe. Looks like a beautiful day out there. Can't beat the wolf fish for eating, either.

Got a call today at the shop that the volume of mackerel around the curl on Jeffries was staggering yesterday afternoon. Apparently a couple of miles of bait!! It was the most this captain had ever seen in 30 years of fishing out there!!

WTF. I was out yesterday looking for bait... All I found was huge bait balls of sandeels around the merrimack and some schoolies in the mouth.

The sand eels were so thick I thought my fishfinder was on the fritz. I guess I should have headed to the curl..

Wish some of the macks were my way a little. Marked a couple schools, but by the time the jigs got down the schools dispersed. Hopefully we will be able to load up by the time they take off.

Nice way to start off the season Shoe. Nothing like some nice groundfish to put some filets in the freezer. And no doggies, what did you hit the lottery?

We did something similar to you- although we wet our lines for 30 mins on the bumps with all the others south of the shoals

Then we found joy on Old Scantum- made 2 drifts that made our day and sent my crew home with nice filet o' codfish....
