Bingo!!! Chum has it. That was the first thing i noticed as well.
If these are your first haywire twists you get an A for effort and a solid B+ for your work. Open up the twist a bit and break, not cut the tag and you are good to go. You got the hard part down. Your barrel wraps look really nice.

Just a thought here but are you guys using any tools to do these? I've been using a dubro easy twist for years now and all of mine look good. None have have ever let go either. I use circle/heavy mono now but that's besides the point.

    Chumtini's looks the best.

    round 2

Allow myself to try round two.

I am not using any tool, as the Dubro company discontinued the #3 haywire twist maker. There is a fellow on here, Kaiser, who is looking into making a similar tool - but nothing as of yet.

Does anyone have any home made vices etc that might relieve finger and wrist tension? I have a bunch of these do to, and don't want to order a $400 tool.

Thanks for all your candid input. what a great forum!!

Terrence, I will show you. I promise, and they will be the nicest hays and barrels anywhere! Go to Sears and get yourself a pair of vice grips that are of the large handle size. Key here is to buy the ones with the slimmer end at the tip, sort of like needlenose pliers. What you do is pinch the mainwire and the tag wire once you've run it through your hook, pinch the two pieces at the intersect with the vice grips. Next grab your tag end with your linesmans pliers(oh yeah, you have to buy those too for this to work) and start wrapping your tag end around your mainwire. No matter how loose or how tight they will all slip and cinch down under enough pressure. The barrel is what stops this all from coming unglued and losing fish. There is one more piece of this puzzle and I again, will show you in person. This works on all guage wire, just takes some practice. My twists are better than any "tool" could produce, trust me.

Now go practice, see you soon!
