Well I can speak from experience.... In January 2008 I was skiing powder at Deer Valley. I hit a tree stump that was buried beneath the snow. I got hooked up with a doctor out there and he asked what I felt blew out. I told him I knew it was an ACL before I hit the ground. He said he though it was the MCL. After looking at the MRI, he told me we both were right.
Being in my mid 40's I went with the cadaver surgery. Wes will more than likely go with the patella surgery (stronger and more proven.... but harder to rehab. I won't be having insider linebackers take me out across the middle next year so I took the easier route).
My surgery was the first week in February. By the end of March I felt like I could try to ski again. But threats from both my wife and doctor to destroy my other knee if I tried, stopped me. By June I felt 90% and by August I was 100%. I skied last year with a brace and felt great. There was only one day when the knee felt "puffy" out of about 15 days skiing. Or as I put it, the knee hurt just as much as every other part of my aging body, so I guess that means it is healthy.
Now Wes has some benefits that I didn't have (younger, stronger, able to dedicate himself to his rehab instead of working and raising kids). But he has some challenges I didn't have (the patella is a tougher surgery to recover from, even though I ski very agressively I am not a professional football player... I can didctate my own speed, he needs only one speed ... 100%)
Doctor Mike here expects him back working out in camp in August and playing in games at 95% by October next year. If he survives next year, he will be 100% the year after.
Mike
