Get Reel headed to Veatch on Saturday with the all-star crew with regulars of Paul, John (on the edge), Chris (hoopa drives the boat) and first timers Fred (the Seaworm) and his friend Joe. The six of us loaded up and underway to Veatch’s by 0630. Best weather window I have ever had. We came up to the SST break between East Atlantis and Veatch and started to troll towards Veatch. About an hour into it we see some surface activity and soon thereafter 9 rods go down. The first of many fire drills. We went 6 for 9 on small YFT, but all were of legal size. This went on for the day with periods of quiet times mixed with in with multiple hookups and few big mahi. Got to Veatch and the SSTs were in the high-70s. I registered as high as 79.4 degrees. Rip Dog and J-Seas were working the area and we started the information exchange. There was a lot of marlin activity and soon enough we were tight to our first billfish. John did a fine job of catch and release of whitey number one. The boat P-Pod announced he was tight to a really big blue and asked for room. His battle went on for almost three hours with the end game being a release of a grander blue marlin. His beam is 15 feet and the fish was all of sixteen feet long. Well done on a 50W!
We set up for the night on the west wall of Veatch and had a perfect drift to the NE and across the tip. A lot of life in the area, very few squid in the lights and a very quiet night. We set out mostly sword baits and had nothing all night. Broke out the soy and wasabi and had some fresh sashimi and Seaworm upped the freshness a notch. A pair of mahi cruised through but did not stay. Not a single bite at night. The only bite I heard of was Rip Dog playing tug-o-war with a big tiger shark.
Get reel was up on the troll with lines in by 0515 and within a half hour had a multiple of small YFT. This went on for the day with a couple decent (50# class) YFT thrown in the mix. We got a whitey in the spread window shopping and Hoopa did a masterful job of dropping back a skirted hoo and feeding her. Seaworm on the rod with a very acrobatic whitey for his fist billfish release was fantastic. Some pictures of our outing.
Thanks to the weather Gods, a great crew and it was really nice having Rip Dog, J-Seas and Salty Dog to chat it up with out there. It was great fishing with you. Can’t wait to do it again!
Tight lines,
Will
If anyone knows P-Pod, congratulate them for joining the grander club and ask them to post some pictures of the big girl.
