Ha! Thanks for the entertainment gentlemen. This thread is absolutely ridiculous. My clients and I have enjoyed some great action on the 68 inch class fish on stand up tackle in 09. Its an easy fishery, and it has drastically boosted the northeast sportfishing economy ten fold. We will continue to fish it on the Castafari in between bluewater canyon trips. Its a great fishery for all who choose to experience it, and anyone can play this game which makes it special.
Its LEGAL. If you dont like it and care so much, write a letter to congress....send out petitions to the NMFS. CHANGE THE LAW. In other words get off your ass and do something if youre TRULY bothered by it. Are you really making money giant fishing? Only a few heavy hitters get it done. The rest are dreamers who just sit and watch...again....and again....and again.
But our effect as charter caps and weekend warriors....compared to the impact of longlining lets say....pleas. Take a drive down to NewBedford and chat with the caps down there. Tell them to stop killing bycatch so you can catch more giants. Or better yet go to an ICCAT meeting and learn about the mortality stats of a charter fleet versus a siene/longline fleet, especially in the Med.
This debate isnt about tuna preservation. Its about a personal issue pissing match. Eric catches a boatload of fish....and makes good money doing it. He will continue to do so. So will I, and a few other busy charter guys. We will promote this fishery, and if Eric wants to yap about it...just try to enjoyThe guys is making a living. Big deal. Eric has done far more for the preservation of bluefin tuna than most of us, including you.
The giant industry is past tense for most except for a few heavy hitters and some of the best caps are endorsed by "silent investers"... So what. Great for them. Does that make them less cool or authentic as fishermen? Im assume you own your boat...outright. I own my boat...all that goes with it both good and bad. I pay the bills with fish. Oh well. Im not going to cry about it. Im gonna catch fish. I will spend the last 2 months of the fall fishing 4 to 5 days a week chasing medium bluefin. My last bluefin trip was 6 for 6. We greased a 71 incher. Charter had a blast! Got paid again. Tasted great on the way in mixed with a little soy and wasabi. The fish are here to stay. Bring it on. If channel 68 spills a few of Erics fish stories, and they go right up your ass, be sure and congratulate him on his hard earned success. It might help you feel better. No dogfish! Tight lines
