As far as DNA goes, trust me, you can't prove where a fish comes from in a week. I collected and sent 150 bluefin finlet samples to one of the best Phd's in this country and I am still waiting for his results over two years later. It takes time. As for what Chris is saying he is 100% on target as I also know\work with the man sampling these fish as I have given him 3 juvenile tuna heads in the last week. The rumors and BS that get started because "others" try to jump on the "hot" topic because theirs is not, is endless. And like what was already stated, who cares where these fish were born, there here now so they get to be ours!! Next week they could be in Canada, or maybe the Figs.. BB... Sword.. oh please?!?!? Good luck. Capt. Eric

A Portland boat went to Georges this week and caught three 400-500 lb. fish in six hours. A crewmember told me he counted sixty-four boats, some of which were twenty-five foot center consoles.

He's right I was there Thursday. 2 26' center consoles and the forecast was less than ideal. Thursday did turn out to be a really nice day out there, but NWS was calling for NE 15knts 4-5ft and going shitty on Friday.

We left Thurs at 9pm and at least one of the 26's was still there. I'm sure the capt is a good/experienced boater but I think its a bit much to be running that far this time of year and to Georges no less in a 26 footer. The tides out there make things ugly really quick.

    Eric all very true.

One obstacle, and one reason nobody trusts one another is we have two camps of scientists, both of whom rely heavily on public and commercial help that don't release data. The Tag-A-Tiny news site hasn't had a tag update in over a year, Tag-A-Giant has probably posted the results of 3 tags out of 1200.

It would be really nice, and a good gesture towards the public support if they could assign an intern to put up page where some of the key tag data could be posted.

The only way to get to the bottom of the movement of these fish is a few thousand satellite tags and a public reporting of the results.

Here's a theory/guess I have about these fish. It has several points.

    1. Small school fish like warmer waters (New Jersey, Med, Spain etc) only going farther north with the warmest water.

    2. The really big (super Giants) may travel through those waters from time to time but their main foods (Makerel, Squid, Herring) are found in greater mass from the gulf of Maine north and only pass through in the fall.

    3. Changes in where this fishery has occored is due to water temps and bait available nothing else.

    4. I think these fish Med and Western are in fact the same fish migrating to different areas to feed. They may differ in build slightly depending on where they are spawned and grow in early stages, but I think except for the very biggest fish they are just as likely to be in Gloucester as they are in Portugal.

I think the common theory was that they mixed as smaller fish not as larger. IE, big big fish should be staying mainly on one side or the other so if the science does show these are big eastern fish....!

I would bet $50 tags from each camp support the other persons position and vice versa which is why we never see much of the data. But who knows....

They don't post the data because it would prove all their theories wrong and they wouldn't get there grant money end of story!!!!!!
