    gen cat retention 2011

Not what I was hoping for....any recollection of an increase in retention limits in the past??

Coastwide General Category BFT Fishery Opens on 6/1.

Starting on June 1, the daily retention limit for vessels permitted in the Atlantic tunas General or HMS Charter/Headboat categories (while fishing commercially), will be ONE BFT/vessel/day/trip measuring 73" or greater CFL. Stay tuned for adjustments to this default limit. The Gulf of Mexico is designated as a spawning grounds for BFT and therefore NMFS does not allow vessels, commercial or recreational, to target BFT while fishing in this area.

Coastwide General Category BFT Fishery Opens on 6/1.
The commercial General category fishery will reopen on June 1. The default retention limit of ONE large medium or giant BFT per vessel per day/trip will apply June 1 and June 2. Starting on FRIDAY JUNE 3 the General category daily BFT retention limit will increase to THREE large medium or giant BFT per vessel per day/trip. The Gulf of Mexico is designated as a spawning grounds for BFT and therefore NMFS does not allow vessels, commercial or recreational, to target BFT while fishing in this area.

No word yet, has to be coming real soon.

And just to be VERY CLEAR- the General Category is 3 fish per day, except for June 1 and June 2, since it is going to take a couple days to get the 3/day made official.

    General Category Quota
    Total Quota 404.4 metric tons
    January 21.4 mt
    June 1-August 31 202.2 mt
    September 107.2 mt
    October & November 52.6 mt
    December 21.0 mt

January and December are pretty much set aside for the NC fishery but if you can catch one up north I'm pretty sure it is entirely legal.

If you subtract January and December that leaves roughly 362 mt for the northern fishery.

As an example how the monthly quotas work if on August 15th the June 1 - Aug 31 202.2 mt quota is reached they will shut the fishery down until Sept. 1.

I expect there to be closures a few times this year if the fish come back strong and at 3 fish per day. The October-November quota could last less than a week if the fish are in.

As far as I know it died. They listened and that was that. Nothing changed. They took the discards off the top and left it like that.

    Someone else might know more.
