Diesel Fuel and Taxes

hey guys,

i sell this stuff so here is the tax breakdown..fyi..for CT the tax state.

First of all Diesel fuel is sold now as ULSD for any ON road or OFF road applications, it is all the same (15PPM sulfur) new EPA guidelines.

ON road is CLEAR - what you get at the pump.
OFF road is DYED RED - at the terminal as it is picked up by the tank truck.
It is all the same..fuel just dyed for tax reasons.

ON ROAD is taxed federally and state.
FED TAX - .37cents
CT STATE TAX -.244 cents

OFF ROAD is taxed only federally
FED TAX - .37

Marine Fuel is supposed to be RED and taxed only at the federal level.

Why a marina would sell ON ROAD (Clear) and charge the state tax is beyond me, other than the supplier is playing games with the marina. Or they want the float on the tax money. Then tell you to apply to get it back at the end of the year..what?????

So if we delivered OFF ROAD MARINE FUEL to your boat by truck on FRIDAY the 24th, here is the price story:

Our cost: $ 4.09 as of friday the 24th New Haven Terminal
Margin: .40
Fed Tax .37
Total: $ 4.79

If you find it cheaper in CT, 3 things cause that:

1. They have old fuel at old pricing in tanks
2. The supplier is charging a smaller margin (which is reality since marinas have storage tanks, not just a delivery to your boat by truck).
3. The marina was smart enough to lock-in some fuel in the futures forward market (which i highly doubt).

When the season settles in the prices will jump at the marina pump..why? Most marina's charge a profit per gallon of .75 to 1.25 to run the fuel dock.

How to combat this: either negotiate with the marina, your allready paying a huge slip bill or ask to have a local truck bring it to your boat directly. Most marina's won't allow this, since most fuel oil companies do not carry the "overwater fueling insurance" which is wicked expensive. Also, it competes with their money making fuel dock.

Most "town docks" allow fueling, that is what they are for..it's a pain because you have to move the boat special for the fueling and tide and timing with the fuel delivery company is a planning deal, but you may save quite a bit...

that's my .02 cents..
