late report going back the past 3 weekends. fishing has been good. this year i'm making a point to keep a detailed log of each trip. i have always kept some sort of notes, mostly mental, but this year i'm concentrating on more details, so I bought myself a notebook and some pencils. Hopefully I’ll be able to learn a thing or two….
I’ve been mostly going after stripers, but decided to do a little flounder fishing the other weekend. Caught my fair share in front of georges and deer island. Mostly drifting, which begs the question – do you find yourself drifting or anchoring up when using the chum bag? The fishing was steady on the drift, my only issue was having to relocate and ruin the chum slick I created. I've fished both ways. Not sure it matters as it would with say, sharkin’. Didn’t explore other spots that I heard about, but look forward to doing so.
striper fishing has been great. huge balls of bait that most closely resembled the 1/2-3/4oz crippled herring that was in my box. didn't catch anything with it, but that's what the bait looked like. So much for matching the hatch. ha. what did work was some 4" & 6" sluggos, as well as some paddle tails. Mostly keepers, none bigger than 33”, with a few shorts. Kept a 29” for the table – Cajun seasoning and grilled. Made a mango, avocado, cucumber salsa and rocked the fish tacos. Fish were very aggressive and judging by the colors (and lack of stomach content), they were new to the harbor. Lots of fun on the lightweight gear!! Didn’t use the fly rod this time out, too windy for my liking, but I know the flies in the box would have matched perfectly. Thought about using a dropper, but didn’t bother. Need to check that out next time. Also, please stop driving directly onto a school of breaking fish. As you approach, cast to the school. All you’re doing is driving the fish down by running directly on top of them. It’s highly annoying.
On Saturday (6/11), went to boston light, fished the last 2hrs of the incoming, slack and few hours of outgoing. caught some macks and live lined those on the rocks. It was a slow day, but a couple keepers made it a good day. All fish released. Btw…99% the rigs I made are circle hooks and I’m lovin’ the hookup ratio!!
