10-2-09 The plan was to hit the bank for a little tuna action in the triton with Get Reel (Will) and Paul. I got to be honest I thought we were gonna have some problems right off the bat with the boat. She has been sitting on the trailer for a month and a 1/2. The last time I was in her grabbing gear for a canyon run i think she got the scent of Tiarra, Out Island, and Carolina on me.
Good news is she performed flawlessly with the exception of myself forgetting to turn the bilge switch before a few drifts in less than ideal conditions. "Hey Chris is all that water suppose to be in the cockpit?".
We headed out of Plymouth at 5:30am and shot over to Duxbury to pickup our dozen pogies from John. We then headed out to the swc and made a short drift without any luck and we were off to phb area. Upon arriving we were greeted with halfbeaks spraying everywhere with what appeared to be upper 40" fish airing out big time.
Now comes the good part. Will has been wanting a bluefin on a spinning rod since I started fishing with him last year. Almost as bad as i want a WAHOOOOOOOOO!!!! Owning a walkaround is not ideal for the purpose but it is doable. So we position our selves just in between a couple schools teeing off on bait and Will fires a popper into the melee. Splash, swirl, "I just had a swing and miss", crank, pop, crank, bigger splash, "I'm tight and its a largeeeeeer variety tuna". Yee haa's exchanged and its game on.
After several blistering runs we settle in to the fight and start gaining line on the fish. 1/2 hr into the fight we are starting to make some progress and the reel starts to misbehave. What the fhck. 10 minutes later the main line parts. Fin powerpro.
Ok we got pogies and there are big fish around lets put the kite out and set the balloons. Nada, nothing, zippo. Wind dies off completely like shutting the door and kite goes for a swim. Readjust and we start to slow troll. Nada, nothing, zippo. Let's take a ride and find some fish. Run out to the lanes about 7 miles scanning the horizon for splashes and sure enough there they are. Again spraying halfbeaks and the upper 40" variety. Will throws on a purple/black needle i bought the night before and fires a perfect cast into the white froth. "If we don't hookup on that one and ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ" FISH ON and its manageble. Will puts the screws to him and 20 mintues into the battle Paul impales him with a SWEET gaff shot. Blood on the deck and a huge WOOOOOOOOOOOO by all three on board.
This was not an all out slam, it wasn't a huge fish, but it was special for me. Will and Paul have been great to me and it was extra sweet to see an experienced fisherman excited like it was his first striper. Tight Lines.
