i am going to be installing a stereo on my center console and with all the choices and possible configurations i am curious to know your what is favorite brand/setup/configuration.
We haven't hooked up yet in Eliot~~Lets make that buddy boat run in Sept/Oct someday!
And DITTO THAT of JaHootie!
I have a pair of the BOSE (outdoor)~ sold at West Marine for like (what?) $300 for the pair or $300 each (can't remember....but!) they are mounted facing starboard and port and through bolted in the sides of my E-Box up-high under the ttop. I'm on my 2nd stereo unit (in 5 yrs), and this one has lasted 3yrs (Sony- Marine- maybe 50watts- front face flips down to insert a CD)~ I also used Monster cable direct from tuner to speakers~ have had no rust or corrosion issues on speakers ~ its very clean!
Don't know if this helps but remember the stereo will take a beating no matter how well its installed~ greasy fingers~ WOT bouncing/ wires/ charts flopping on it in the Ebox. I wouldn't spend more than $150-200 on the tuner unit.
Follow Jahooties advice~ get a Sirius subscription and don't worry about ALWAYS losing FM stations when you hit 25 mi o/s
Check out the new Fusion tuners. I just put one on a 35 Viking with the Fusion wired remote up on the bridge. Awesome...plug in your ipod...cant beat it.
we put sony stereo and speakers on a 19' whaler. sounds great, put speakers seem to be losing quality after two seasons (we expected a short life span). given how exposed to the elements your speakers will be, consider that they could be replaced sooner than later. i am a firm believer that you spend a couple extra dollars now, saves you money in the long run...except when saltwater is involved. just something to consider.
couple problems we faced -
1)the speakers were installed facing out towards the gunwales. this makes them very exposed to splash. didn't have a real choice though, it was the only place we could mount them.
2)speakers facing outwards, we all know how sound travels over water. personally, i hate hearing other peoples tunes when i'm on the water. i'm sure they hate hearing mine, even when turned down low.
