Best Catch
my wife
we had just trolled by a high flyer and a rod went down. i assumed it was a small mahi as we had caught one on a prior pass a few minutes earlier. i pretty much didnt slow the boat down and just wanted my dad to get it in quick. i was giving him a hard time about it and told him he didnt need a harness. i thought the drag was too low and he was taking too long.
to understand this pic, you have to realize this rod is a broomstick with a stiff taper. i went over to the reel and saw the drag was buttoned up to 24 lbs.
it's not a huge fish compared to the fish caught on this forum, but that season all we caught were small yellows from 25-40 lbs and this fish was weighed on a scale at 84 lbs (i am 6'3"). this was the best fish of our season and the biggest yft my dad ever caught.
my dad died suddenly 3 months after that pic was taken 4 yrs ago. there will be no fishing picture that will ever mean more to me than this one.
Mine was from this season. It was my new boats first tuna trip. We left from Scituate and spent almost 2 hours trying to catch some bait. I finally said enough was enough and with only 6 mackerel and I headed east. It was Fathers day and I had my father and best friend, Sean aboard. The plan was to run strait to the golf ball which had been hot the day before. I called Capt. Fred (Seaworm) as I got close and he told me not to bother and that the spot was deader than Elvis. So I spun around and headed back to the SWC and found a nice spot by myself and settled in. Up went the kite and I pinned the biggest mackerel I had on and sent him out. I no sooner turned my back to set up the second rod when I hear SNAP, ZZZZZZZ. I turn to see the kite line falling and immediately reeled up tight and the 80W started screaming. Fish on! We were not there 5 minutes. Sean fought the fish for 45 minutes and my father was able to lip gaff the fish boatside. The plan was to tag an release it. It taped out 80" but unfortunately before I was able to stick the tag in it, the fish went ballistic and threw both the hook and the lip gaff at the same time. We were going to release it anyhow but It would have been nice to get a picture of the fish. O well, good karma for next season. The fish was the first giant I have caught on one of my own boats, Sean's first tuna, and biggest, and it was great to share that with my father on fathers day.
great thread! Here's a couple that I like. First is a dolphin in west atlantis canyon that catches the reflection perfectly to mirror the crew. Second is a picture Kent took of my boat pulling into oceanographer canyon, last one is the biggest blue marlin i've caught at 125" jaw to fork.

My oldest Son (16yrs old) finally gets his first 30+lb Cod…. This picture was taken August 13th, 32 miles out – look at the ocean, flat calm!
My buddy with his first Blue Shark, caught this 9 footer on a Penn Slammer with 30lb test and a surface plug, also caught August 13th, what an epic 90 minute battle!
