experimenting with deep sea fishing baits: worms?

Given that cod and many groundfish are voracious, indiscriminate scavengers, I'm wondering how sandworms and even earthworms (nightcrawlers) would work with them? Anyone ever try? I'll be trying some oddball baits out of curiousity next week and am just looking to narrow down the worm options. thanks for any feedback

any groundfish will eat seaworms, not the best bait but they will eat them. I'd imagine nightcrawlers would work but Ive never used them, so cant say for sure

We have a guy that charter fishes with us that always brings sandworms. We find sandworms in the stomachs of groundfish all the time, but be warned... DOGFISH LOVE THEM. As do small cod. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Clams are cheaper and stay on the hook much better. If the dogfish aren't around and you are in some haddock it might be worth a shot to give the worms a try, but most of the time I'd say its not worth it.
