Funny how the Center for Biological diversity is now listed as headquartered in San Francisco and not Arizona.

Sounds better for the NY Times anti fishing articles that will be published all weekend.

Agency remains concerned; will revisit decision with new science
On May 27, 2011, after an extensive scientific review, NOAA announced that Atlantic bluefin tuna currently do not warrant species protection under the Endangered Species Act.

NOAA has committed to revisit this decision by early 2013, when more information will be available about the effects of the Deepwater Horizon BP oil spill, as well as a new stock assessment from the scientific arm of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas, the international body charged with the fish’s management and conservation.

NOAA is formally designating both the western Atlantic and eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean stocks of bluefin tuna as “species of concern.” This places the species on a watchlist for concerns about its status and threats to the species under the Endangered Species Act.

This is the part that makes me worry.

Sounds like all around correct decision to me. Shouldn't be ESA listed, but should be a species that is watched closely moving forward as more data becomes available. I couldn't agee more with the outcome.

I agree as well. It seems to me that we have to get our legislators to apply more pressure on the europeans who are drastically and blatantly overfishing bluefin.

The EU nations have for the most part been compliant with ICCAT regulations and quotas over the past couple of seasons. The EU has an independant organization (Community Fisheries Control Agency) which is responsible for control, inspection and surveillance of landings and ranching operations through the EU Joint Deployment Plan (JDP). The sensible decision announced today by NOAA may reflect recognition of this to some degree, along with the recent indications of some stock recovery on both sides of the Atlantic. However, there is still some room for improvement with compliance and enforcement in Turkey and among the North African tuna producing nations.
