    EPIRB?

I might have a few extra dollars to invest in saftey. I run my 21'CC most weekends, weather allowing East of Chatham. I am considering adding an EPIRB. Any recommendations? Anyone know of a used one out there? Only needs to work once.......

    Thanks

    Ed

just make sure its fairly new. some people are trying to sell their old ones because they can not be used any more. i think they changed it 4 years ago???

why waste those extra dollars in safety? A new bar or three; a new lure or two, another rod is so much more satisfying.

And - did you even realize that your 600$ EPIRB has a 5 year 300$+ battery renewal requirement.

You want a 406 and that 250$ off of a 4 y.o. EPIRB might nt be quite the bargain you think it was...

For your scenario - I would also look at the PLB's. They are $300-$500 retail, & replacement batteries cost less. Small enough to keep on your person if fishing alone as well.

HAHAHA. Larry, you have me pegged. Lures, rods,........yes, NO.
I never had an EPIRB, don't know much about them or which ones might be best suited for my small boat, big ocean situation. PLB versus EPIRB? What are the pros and cons? What models would you recommend and why?

Chris, thanks for the offer. I may call you once I figure out more about what I might need.

    Thanks, Ed.

Just got the $298 bill for EPIRB battery... quite annoying. Waiting for the raft re-pack bill which might throw me over the edge

ACR or McMurdo or Pains Wessex because they have been around.

406 because its cheaper than a 406/GPS combo and in the safety seminar I took last year both CG and commercial fisherman indicated there was a use case w/ the GPS which I forget right now; where it could beacon the wrong location (last stored??) and confuse a rescue.

the CG person at that seminar was pretty insistent they would find you no problem with a plain old 406.

The difference between a EPIRB and a PLB again as i recall was battery time - I believe EPIRB gives you 48 hr's; PLB 24 of battery time.

They're cheap (relatively speaking). You can get a brand new one with brand new batteries for $500 just about anywhere
