EPA Considering Ban on Traditional Ammunition and Bullets

EPA Considering Ban on Traditional Ammunition and Bullets

EPA Lead Ammo BanFrom the Nat’l Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF)
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under Lisa Jackson, who was responsible for banning bear hunting in New Jersey, is now considering a petition by the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) — a leading anti-hunting organization — to ban all traditional ammunition under the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976, a law in which Congress expressly exempted ammunition.

Environmental activists want to ban lead shot, lead-core bullets, and even fishing sinkers. If the EPA approves the petition, the result [could] be a total ban on all ammunition containing lead-core components, including hunting and target-shooting rounds (even rimfire ammo). The EPA must decide to accept or reject this petition by November 1, 2010, the day before the midterm elections.

Click Here for More Details on EPA Petition to Ban Lead Ammo and Components.

From 8/26/2010 through 10/31/2010, the EPA is inviting comments on the Ammo Ban Petition. The NSSF urges hunters and shooters to submit comments to the EPA opposing any ban on traditional ammunition. Remember, your right to choose the ammunition you hunt and shoot with is at stake.

The EPA has published the petition and relevant supplemental information as Docket ID: EPA-HQ-OPPT-2010-0681. To read the original petition and see the contents of this docket folder, CLICK HERE. To go directly to the ‘comment’ page for this docket number, please CLICK HERE.

Actually I am going to write to her to support this ban! It is long long overdue. As someone who likes to fish with my young son I find it hard to buy lead-free tackle. Astronomical amounts of lead are added to the environment by sportsmen and it is time to wise up. For you own health and the health of our waterways lead should be banned.

50 years from now we are going to wonder how we could be so careless as to use lead in fishing gear just as today we wonder at careless it was to put asbestos in cigarette filters or radium on watch dials or well lead in house paint.

this is ridiculous, when and if this happens im going to fill my basement with bullets

i think 25 rounds of 12 guage non lead costs the same as 100 lead.

don't attack the ammo, if you don't want lead in the water then ban that instead.

I love it... "adding lead"... It came from the enviroment! It along with mercury, copper, and every other of the 103 elements out there. They threw it since the 1800s at ducks and ducks ate it for over a hundred years of no ill effects. Our forefathers right through us ate the birds that ate the lead. I'd have to guess more than a few stray 7 1/2 pellets from dove, #6 from pheasants, and #4 from ducks made its way from my gums through my sphincter without turning my world inside out. Get a grip!

Its like those that ***** about CFCs... A volcano belches more in a single burp than man has produced in all of time. "Oh we're ruining the planet" What arrogant nonsensical bullshit... We're fleas on a dogs back and our impact is pretty negligible. God damn global warming bunny boinking enviromentalist crap. Green on this...

    There I feel better...

Given just some time the environment will take care of itself
Here is the wiki on Bikini Atoll
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bikini_Atoll
The radiation is still leeching into the food via the root systems so it is not completely clean yet but it has done this after 23 atomic explosions. So the 500 yr nothing will live rhetoric has been proven to be unfounded. Funny how these same types of people are all over lead and every other thing they think they can make money on.
Deep I hear ya Isn't it amazing If I spill a cup of oil in a lake/ocean I have 3 or 4 agencies that want jusitiction. Yet Amtrack has oilers for the wheels that spray constanly and I never hear a peep. Boy it must because Biden likes to be the engineer on that train what say you on that???

Whew. Why such a violent response to my suggestion that lead sinkers should be banned?

I suggest we all calm down and think about this issue a little more deeply.

Take a lead sinker and rub it with you fingers; your finger will get gray. This is finely divided lead particles adhering to your skin. Now pull out a sandwich and have lunch; that lead is going to get into your system. This is a serious problem for children; lead intact in astronomically small levels can lead to childhood learning disabilities, development problems, and behavior problems such as aggression; i.e. dumb and violent.

I think I made mention above... If I added up and melted down all the bird shot, buck shot, split shot and fishing sinkers that made the trip from lips through my chocolate starfish with no perceptable damage I could make a mooring ball for a tanker.

Yeah theres lead that rubs off on your fingers and it occurs naturally in parts per billion in sea water that exceed what you might think. Lead, Pb, ol #82 is about as benign of a metal as you'll find. Doesn't oxidize nearly like others. Doesn't go easily into solution and the nember of electrons in the outer shell are pretty stable so short of acid it doesn't react with much.

All metals when ingested bring a set of problems. Mercury, copper, tin, tungsten, iron and yes lead too. Its that they are not easily filtered from the blood stream and can bond molecularly with other things that do cause harm. Fake lead doesn't negate impacts. Its just different problems it creates...

For grins I'll use steel bird shot as just a quick example... With lead hunters have greater range and pellet penetration with more smaller pellets. Going to the lighter steel reduces range and number of pellets a shell can hold that can even reach most waterfowl. Far greater number of crippled birds due to the use of steel versus lead.

Now for any of you that want to get green around me thats exactly what color you'll see copper oxidize into. Take a way lead and something else as bad or worse will take its place. hell I'll load my shotgun shells with nails and broken glass or use parking curb stones for an anchor and oily spark plugs for fishing weights. In the sceme of things you nor I nor We can so uch as ripple the enviroment. I said it above. It is nothing short of conceit and arrogance to think that we as a specie are capable of so much as denting the over all structure or well being of this spinning rock we occupy. Hug a tree hard enough and all youre gonna get is splinters.

There now i said it and I feel better again.
