    Electrical Question

I have an electramate reel i use for kite fishing. It is wired with a 15 amp plug. The boat I fish on now has all 30 amp plugs for the bigger reels we use deep dropping. Can I make a pigtail to plug the electramate into and then plug into the 30 amp receptacle or will it be to much for the motor?

the plug on the reel is a nice composite unit so i hate to cut it off and the ones in the boat we use on our big diawa's which we use more than kites so that wouldnt make sense. i guess what i really want to know is, is 30 amps to much for a 15 amp motor because if the motor is overloaded I am guessing that it wont trip the breaker.

As long as the voltage is the same its no problem. The reel is either 12 or 24 volts. Most likely 12 volts. What type of reel is it?

Inovator is correct. It is voltage that matters here. The reel is probably 12V DC rated for 15A. Pluging it into a 30A circuit will not put 30A into the reel. The 30A is what the curcuit is rated for(The curcuit should have a 30A fuse/breaker) The reel will only draw what the motor on it needs, which is less than or equal to 15A as long as the reel was not modified. Putting a 30A plug on it should be fine.

Have an electrician get involved if you are not fully confident.

There is no problem with having more amperage than the motor needs, but remember to have a separate breaker or fuse to the motor. If the motor were to draw more amperage than say the 15 amps the breaker would pop, avoiding the wiring to motor from becoming excessively hot and possibly melting down.

Jeff, It's the voltage that is important here!

I agree with the others-don't worry about the current- the motor will take what it needs. Just make sure the voltage is the same that the reel wants.-Sword
