I've never had any issues with my 40' RP in a following sea, although like many of the newer Beal or downeast designs she is relatively flat underneath compared to the built-downs. My last boat was a Crowley, which sometimes had a tendency to pitch-pole in a following sea.
Spencer Lincoln and Royal Lowell designs are some of the more popular built-downs. Spencer designed the Duffy, Northern Bay, and BHM designs. Royal Lowell designed the legendary Bruno Stillman's - some of the earliest production molded fiberglass hulls that are still going strong.
I understand the 46-foot Wesmacs are an impressive sea boat. I should add that Wesmacs are not a traditional downeast design. I will own one if ever I win the Maine lottery. Until then, I will continue to go broke trying. The faltering economy has been a real problem for the Maine lobster industry and consequently Maine boat builders.
