this isn't for ever...and you can still keep a 59 inch and under fish???? where is the problem? I saw a whole bunch of 50 pounders 4 miles off the gurnet Saturday...there are plenty of small fish to target, to tmack, the US catches about 2% of the worlds tuna, stopping us would do nothing except make a few individuals and enviros happy, the foriegn boats will still sit outside our 200 mile limit and continue to slaughter the Western Atlantic BFT (even though that is an oxymoron in itself because the fish go to both sides of the atlantic) the recs overfished and are now paying the piper, if it were the commercial bft quota it would have the same effect. Catch shares in BFT? come on they will never have catch shares for bft...not enough history in it...just suck it up and next year will be different. If they combined the quota everyone would lose, believe me its not a good idea buts its one that NMFS would like but not one that anyone wants...believe me if that was the case size limits would change and the fishermen would catch the fish and the recs would be out by the end of July...

Since when has NMFS ever done what the people want... or whats right... No catch shares? Think again... Alaska and all its industries said it would never happen there...

Divide and conquor is going on exactly as planned and until we all get on one page we are ALL screwed...

Good point Doug. Alot of guys dont really know the fishery they just know the areas. Go to the areas and catch fish. Find the boats find the fish. The guys that know that know the fishery will have no problem with the new regs. Those guys tend to be the sportsman not meat fisherman. C&R if you want to play with the big boys for the rest of the season..

Hey Mark that comment a page or so back was good stuff. Had a little Dennis Miller In it..

I was one of the big boys. I shipped more sushi to tsukiji from the 70's til mid 90's than I care to remember... I had my own ways in my own places... Never been a fleet kind of guy... I do know the fishery and do have a problem with it...
Not that I intended to even wet a line for them this year, still like that option... Its not about that. Its about NMFS and the steady take take take stream of bullshit. Just another notch in their apparent path of shutting it all down. As mentioned. The north half of jersey is effectively shut down from all species starting in early September...
One 58" fish is hardly a draw when you gotta run 40-60 miles on that end, then split it up among say 4-5 guys...
Nobody wins when they take something off the table for anyone and the division I see here loud and clear just opens the door for them to keep closin shit down til there is nothing left to fish for...

No one is stopping you from wetting a line for BFT you just can not keep anything outside the slot limit. I dont know the fishery all that well and only been involved for a half dozen years or so, and have no problem with not being able to take a trophy fish. Could have been alot worse. Could have left the trophy and closed the smaller slot..

We recs have been living fat dumb and happy for 5 or 6 years with pretty easy fishing. Now we have to go on a diet.

That diet is a starvation one for the guys in certain areas... Read again... The draw of a single 58" fish for a crew of five and having to run 40-60 miles is prohibitive... Guys are bailing and thats hurting everyone and everything along the line...

Thats why it is called fishing. Just because you go an spend a few bucks is no garrentee you are going home with meat.

How many Rec guys have got thier Trophy fish every year any way. What we just lost is not that big a deal and a very small portion of the rec take.

Right, and the Rec take will soon be nothing...I'm guessing around August 1st.
But, what the hell, serves us right for others not reporting fish.

Its not about the take! Its about the shot at taking one... THAT is fishing... Without the shot, chasing just one pee wee ain't worth the effort for many... With all the other shit stripped from the take list effectively nothing is left. Skates? Dogfish? Thats about it and I don't forsee a lot of guys investing in boats and all the stuff that comes with it for that...
Every little piece they strip away IS a big deal...
