Disgusting. I saw the same thing a number of years ago fishing a tournament down there. We came on this spot that had acres of huge stripers doing the same thing. We vented a few that were kicking, but there were just too many to make a dent.
Bycatch? No, the bycatch of draggers is very minimal

I can't get the video.Probably a good thing. If it's dead floaters, the saddest part is that it's all perfectly legal, actually mandatory.Unfortunately, although they were removed from the biomass, those fish will never be counted against any quota.Fisheries management in action.

That's horrible, and if you picked up half the fish that were going to waste you'd probably be over your limit and subject to federal law.
What size were the fish, can't tell exactly but they look like nice 36-inch fish that'd be spawning in a few months...

I heard and saw the same pictures.
The question that came to my mind was why didn't the dragger have the tool/training to pop the air bladder as I have seen done w/ grouper in Fla. Those fish were pinned to the surface by their air bladder - a carefully inserted needle in the right spot would have freed them to swim down again. I have seen guides pull out a laminated card showing where on a grouper to insert a needle to release the air from the bladder without touching any other internal organs. |
