    Discovery Channel Show on Swordfishing

Anyone watch the Discovery channel show on the longline boats for swords?

For those who know the fishery, how many average baits do they go through before they get to a sword? Is it 1 sword per mile? , more, less?

Nice tuna they got at the end of the show.

yes. I saw one act of insane seamanship which presumably was made for TV and learned something pretty useful for my next trip south.

If you are getting in a survival suit and jumping in the water tro transfer from one boat to another why would you tie two boats together in 10' seas as part of the transfer?

The way the mackerel were hooked was an eye opener to me.

The gaff and release on that first pup sword sucked too.

I watched last night too. Reminded me why I quit commercial fishing when I was a young buck! I saw more than a few bone head stunts that could have got people hurt/dead. I can't imagine having a film crew under foot on a small work boat. Scotty.

I have a question about swords. Why is it that long liners use mackeral for sword bait and most guys i know that canyon fish use squid for a deep sword bait?
Is it a location thing, water temp thing, cost thing, availability thing. or just a thing.

$10 says people will be hooking mackerel through the tail on the canyons this weekend.
