    Diawa or Shimano

I am looking for a new Cod fishing reel. Does anyone have any input on the Shimano Torium 30 or Diawa Saltist 40. They both feel nice and smooth. I just don't want to buy something that need constant maintance & repair.

Do not go with the saltist. The lever that engages the spool is notorious for not actually engaging. I know a few people including myself that have had them fixed and then put them on the shelf because it happens again. go shimano.

In my professional life I am haunted by a software product we have localized into Japanese and sold to Daiwa.

I have endured speeches about quality and presentations about quality at Daiwa from Mr Oda as he picks apart seemingly minor issues with our product.

It has taken great patience and restraint on my part not to take a picture of a Penn and a trashed Daiwa side by side; a Penn perhaps leaning against a bluefin, a Daiwa exhibiting a snapped lne and present the picture and say "Mr Oda - in New England in my fishing community Daiwa stands for s**t".

I am a Shimano fan and have been for a very long time but the Torium is one I would not recomend. The lever that releases and locks the spool has been a problem for me on several occasions. I have fixed this myself a few times and so has Shimano and it continues to come loose. The indside of the Torium is all plastic which surprised me and may not be something that will hold up cod fishing. Personally I would stick with the Shimano but upgrade to the next model.

If you go with the Shimano Torium be sure to upgrade to smoothies, the stock drags suck out loud, while you are at it there is a anti reverse dog upgrade/mod as well that will solve that issue. I have a 20 and a 30 and did the upgrades on both and have had 0 problems. It was short money and easy to do.

Honestly i would consider the torium 20 over the 30 for cod fishing. The only difference between them is the width of the reel and the weight. They have exactly the same drag capasity and retrieve rate. The 30 does hold more line but either will hold more 50 or 65 lb braid then you will use cod fishing.. Lets face it Cod are not exactly reel burners. They can tug a little but any of the Torium line from the 16 up are more then capable of catching NE ground fish. You just need to take care of them and do a few simple upgrades.

See the info on the drag and anti reverse dog upgrade here.

Thanks for the input guys. I was leaning twards the Shimano so I think thats what I will buy and then do the upgrades. As for the 113h I already have 4 of them. I am looking for faster retreive.

We took all the daiwas off the boat. The 450 was supposed to be an improvement over the 113h for bassfishing - a bunch of blowups/rebuilds later - they're in the basement. I'd feel bad about even e-baying those pieces of crap.
