what type of dacron are you using, i just wanted to get a quote to put me in the ballpark and one guy said only use 80 pound cortland dacron and i'll be able to get 450yds and then 100 yards of 100# mono, but i thought most people used higher test dacron and still got more, really weird i'm going to give a call down to the store i always use for my offshore stuff i was just getting some wire line put on striper reels and figured it wouldn't hurt to ask, but was puzzeled with the answer

Do you want to put Dacron or hollow core spectra? You will get much more hollow spectra on your reels than dacron. I have 500 yds 130lb Jerry Brown hollow core spectra with 100+ yds of 100lb moimoi on my 50WLRSA's. If you choose dacron make sure you wet pack it on the reels under load.

Also be aware that Dacron Does not last as long as Spectra. You will be replacing the Dacron every season. Spectra will last allot longer.
Dacron is less expensive then Spectra but over the life of the Spectra it will cost allot less to use it.

A 50W International will easily hold 650 yards of 130 spectra and a 150 yard top shot of 100 lb mono. I like 600 yards of spectra and 100 to 150 yards of Mono. This gives you 700 to 750 yards of line, more then you will need on a 50, and the reel is not stuffed so there is room for the occasional bunching up that happens with rookie fisherman not level winding.
The Spectra will run you about $100.00 per reel. The top shot about 30 bucks +-. Have it spooled onto your reel at a shop that has a machine that can put it on under the correct pressure.

    Just my 2 cents FWIW

What is the advantage of having the dacron over just straight mono? Is it just because the dacron is stronger?

John, even on my charterboat I get 3 seasons out of dacron easy. I only use Cortland Dacron. I am not real big into this whole 700-800 yds of line on 50wides. You are paying a ton of money for line you will probably never use, imho. I know what reels hold and what some people claim to have on the reels doesn't seem to add up on my line counter machine? Good to know Eric. Thanks. How much 130 Cortland can you (or do you) get on a 50W leaving enough room for a 150 yard 100lb mono topshot?

The Cortland looks to be a little more then 1/2 the price of Spectra depending on were you get it. That does make it a real option (no Pun intended)

It's better to have, than to want

I use spectra on my 50s. It works for me. The bigger reels get dacron. It's a personal preference thing.

But I think there's other advantages with spectra's smaller diameter. There's less line drag thru the water and spool diameter: If you have 400 yards out with a reel loaded with spectra, your diameter is still at 1/2 spool. With dacron, your down to the nub.

Another alternative is spectra over dacron. Use the dacron to fill some of the spool, then load it up with spectra with a spliced loop-to-loop connection.
