Crimson Tide Charters Shark Report 7-31-10

Who needs to go south of MV for great sharkin? Sat I had on board the Dudley/Webster boys. These guys are landlocked like myself in central mass and have been pumped about this trip for months.

We left Green Harbor and headed east of Stellwagen for a full day of sharkin. These guys didn't want tuna cod or bass. Just sharks!!! Of course we ran thru pods of bustin tuna on the way to the grounds and my right hand keep pulling back on the throttle out of habit. After a few middle fingers by the tuna I put the blinders on and we set out the chum. The ballon baits were set at 150, 100, and 50. (2) live bluefish were also set out - 1 on the kite and the other tight to the boat. 15 minutes later our first blue shark on - 5'. "This aint no small mouth hey". This went on for the next few hrs as everyone got to tug on a blue shark and they progressively got larger.

Then it got quiet. Real quiet. Not a bite for over and hr. I told the guys to get ready cause it only meant one thing. Monster lurkin nearby. No sooner the kite bait gets anhilated and all that is left is a 10' diameter hole in the water and the 50 screamin zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I didn't see the offender but started clearing everything as this was a monster. After a few blistering runs we settled in for the long haul. Now I'm biting at the chops "Tuna" or "Shark". Either way it was a good one. After a half hour the drag gets pushed up from strike to a little over. Then a half hour later it gets pushed up to 1/2 way to full and finally after 1hr 15min it goes to full.
We get the fish within 25yds from the boat and he starts coming up to the surface and rolls just enough to give us a glimpse of him. Thresher and he wasn't the 300lb variety. Now he digs deep again and we can't budge him from 50' down. Tried planning him up, changing angles. He wouldn't budge. So I start to handline him on the reel and I get him up to 40' and he's says now way. 15 minutes later pop!!!!! the hook pulls and he wins.

We finish up with a couple blue sharks for each angler, a monster fought and a some nice haddock and cod for the cooler. Thanks again John and the WEBSTAH BOYS HEY.

For my own piece of mind I pulled the rod on a drag scale and ended up with 28lbs at full.
