Council recommends increase in spiny dogfish quote

Since there seems to be a lot of hate and discontent in some of the post replies on this site lately, I thought that I might put some of you guys in the holiday spirit. I just read that the Mid Atlantic Council intends to recomend that the spiny dogfish quota be increased to 35.694 million pounds from 20 million in 2012. The daily commercial limit increases to 4,000 Lbs from 3,000. The New England Council is supposed to adopt the increases as they share dog fish management as well.
The increases follow a 10 year plan to rebuild stocks(can you imagine?) through low quotas and trip limits. The NMFS declared stocks of spiny dogfish rebuilt in 2010.... DUH!.... What the hell took them so long?
Happy holidays to one and all, thanks for the entertainment this year, especially this fall and early winter. I hope we all recieve more patience, tolerance, and thicker skin for 2012.

Highly doubtful they will increase the daily limit. A coast wide quota will be increased meaning a longer season which is better than a daily increase. With the daily increase and the renewal of trade with germany dogs will be worth more and more boats would get involved causing a flooded market and lower prices compared to it being higher because of the germans interest in belly flaps.

Now if we could only get them to increase the SEAL quota! Not just a coincidence that the Stripers move through quicker because all the bait and themselves are getting eaten by the ever growing seal population! Time to start exporting Seal meat to China! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.

Not to start another vicious flame war but I was recently talking to a year round Chatham commercial fisherman who said he sees absolutely zero correlation between bass populations and seals.

The seals are lazy and have no interest in bass or bass bait. They have enough skates to keep them happy for the rest of their lives. Chatham is booming with skates right now. Something has been taken out of the food chain that was eating the baby skates. The seals eat the adult skates like sandwiches. They'd rather export the pair trawlers that stripped the area clean of bait two years ago.

Where they do see the correlation and problem with seals is the infestation of worms in the cod off chatham. The cod are eating the seal shit and getting worms in much higher concentrations than other areas.

Just thought it was pretty interesting... I was of the same opinion too about the seals and bass.

Anybody heard of a bounty on bluefish this past season? Rumor had it the buyers were offering $1.50 a pound at a dock in a southeastern CT dock in late september. If true, it's worrisome.

I thought the worms came from herring? No?

BREAKING NEWS: NOAA has just completed their assessment of worms in cod and determined the worm biomass is dangerously low. As a result cod with no worms must be tagged and released to determine the nature of the problem, more study is required, however, overfishing of worm laced cod is to blame.
