they were netting "sardines". seemed like a generic baitfish about 8-10 inches long.
i think it was this:
http://floridasportfishing.com/magaz...h-sardine.html
i know this because the 2nd day of fishing we chartered a 26 ft panga for roosterfish. we spent 2.5 hrs trying to catch those sardines for bait by casting sabiki's to schools we ran into. in that two hrs we caught maybe a dozen. that was the most fun part of the day.
we slow trolled those live along the beaches and rocks looking for roosters all day long. a bunch died in the livewell and we needed more. the capt saw the net boat and we ran over there and he gave us a dip net full of live ones. it was enough bait for us to share with another charter boat that had no bait as well. but it didnt matter, neither of the charter boats caught any roosters.
they said overall the fishing was slow when we were there. we caught 3 sailfish offshore and no roosters. the numbers for the week were all similar, with the los suenos boats reporting 1-5 sailfish all week.
it's always the same, wherever i go to fish, "you should have been here last week!". they said, "last week, everybody getting grand slams, blue marlin, black marlin, striped marlin, sailfish...."
