Connecticut Outfitter’s weekly Fishin’ Report forThe week of September 24th, 2010

Rivers and Streams:

Smallie Fishing in Enfield on the CT River! Gordon Peterson of Wethersfield has been killin the small mouth bass up in Enfield, wet-wading out to a few deeper holes. 3” Senko worms are his go to offering. With the river running so low, a wet-wade through ankle deep water can get you in good position above some of the deeper (6’?) holes where the fish seem to be concentrated.

CARP! Many great carp to be fought in very close local waters. No other fish fight like carp do. The Mattabesset, the CT River, Pataruski, Union Pond, Dividend Pond, (and many golf course ponds) they seem to be everywhere! These legendary fighters are omnivorous, so the baits can vary from common night crawlers to Pineapple and strawberry flavored boilies and other doughy baits. Carp feed on the bottom and can be “Baited” to come in to a specific area. Carp can be found in the afternoon sucking up the warm sunshine in very shallow water.

Trout fishing: the Farmy is running low too, despite the control of the reservoir. It is still holding good fish-supporting temps in the low 60’s. Seems like most of the anglers are piled up at the usual pools, casting to what seems to be fish that have seen everything. Catch and release areas have plenty of fish to tease. Flies to cast include rusty spinners and Blue wing Olives size 20 or smaller and terrestrials like black foam ants. Spinning guys should try the yellow coach dog rooster tails. No reports from the Salmon.

Lakes and ponds:

Crescent Lake in Southington has loads of baitfish showing. The water is less than clear, somewhere between brown and green, so “scent and noise” baits, live or artificial, are important for anglers looking for those lurker lunker bass. The bass fishing has been very good, especially in the late afternoons. This spot provides good shore access for land-bound anglers, and has a small launch for motor-less craft.

Marine:

Porgy fishing closes Sunday, unless you hire a charter, where the limit of 40 fish per angler per day. This creel limit is a number most feel is worth the trip. Time to fill the freezer! Porgy fishing remains strong.

Black Seabass: Doing well, with many taken on fluke rigs with Berkley Gulp squid strips and 4 ounce banks. The season has been extended by the DEP and fisheries — season is now open until October 11th. It closes until October 31st and then opens until December 31st.

Blackfish opens again October 1st! Can’t wait for that! We’ll have green crab by Thursday afternoon…

Albie’s are in thick and heavy the eastern sound, and so is the wind. Go to baits continue to be Deadly Dicks, Sebile swimshad #95, and Camo Pearl 5” Houdinis (un-weighted or with a small jighead). Reports are good from all over the eastern sound with many guys hookin up an Albie.

Bluefish remain consistently BIG and consistently EVERYWHERE.

Striper fishing is beginning to improve as more and more guys report back in. Night time is better. Live bait fishing produces most of the really big stripers. Live baits include Porgy (when in legal catch season), Bunker, Hickory Shad, and Eels.

Get ready for PIKETOBERFEST with a free seminar at CTO. Thursday night, October 7th at 7pm in the store.
