Connecticut Outfitters Fishing Report

This heat wave has been unbearable unless you were on the water fishing! Fortunately, it always feels a little cooler when you’re on a boat or even standing on the shoreline. Some great options if you’re a shore bound angler are wade fishing for trout or smallmouth bass in rivers like the Housatonic River, Farmington River or the Connecticut River. Surf fishing also provides great relief from the heat since the coastline is usually 5-10 degrees cooler than it is inland.

Rivers & Streams – Some of the trout rivers in the state have begun experience low water levels but most remain fishable. The upper stretches of the Connecticut River above Hartford are fishing well for smallmouth bass. Early morning and dusk are the perfect time to throw topwaters like the Rapala Skitter Pop and the Rebel Pop-R. Below Hartford, largemouth and smallmouth fishing has been good as well. Spinnerbaits, jigs and Keitech swimbaits have accounted for most fish in this area.

Lakes & Ponds – Bass fishermen have been doing very well in locations such as Candlewood Lake, Lake McDonough and Moodus Reservoir. Drop shot rigs, plastic worms and crankbaits are taking a lot of nice fish during daytime hours while spinnerbaits and topwaters are producing best during low light situations. Trout fishing has been productive at West Hill Reservoir and Lake McDonough. Fish are hitting spoons and Rapalas at around 30 -40 feet deep.

Marine District – Fluking remains hot and cold with more throwbacks than keepers but it is fun trying. Bluefish are becoming more and more prevalent along the shorelines. Large schools have been chasing bait into the mouths of the Connecticut River early in the morning, providing fast and furious topwater action. Anglers have been doing very well on the reefs like Hatchetts Reef, Six Mile Reef and The Race using live eels and live porgy.
