There is fishing, there is catching and there is landing

Choppy ride out, lines in at 7:15. Hit a temperature break just south of the claw from 74 to 72 to 75. In the cooler water hooked up with a white marlin on a skirted ballyhoo for about 90 seconds before it spit the hook. We were surprised, since most of the marlin reports mentioned 66 degree water. About 5 miles further south, closer to the fingers than the claw, hooked a 45 inch or so BFT on a skirted ballyhoo (same rod) that we LOST AT THE BOAT to a main line that parted after hitting the side of the boat and a nephew who is experienced but who has been working too hard at his real job this summer to be out on the boat before now (rusty). No other opportunity. Glad to touch base with Sortie today ( Ryan C). With the price of gas and a big ocean out there, it makes sense to share intel whenever possible.

When I say ground fish I meant Fluke, Scup & Sea Bass. We were Just S of nomans in 70 fow and we did okay.

Thanks for confirming - I was wondering the same thing. Have heard decent Fluke reports, but not sure what's happening w/ cod on cox's.

Congrats to Soulmate on the W.Marlin hook-up! That'll get your blood flowing. It was a bit windier than what they were calling. Glad you at least hooked up - those boatside losses hurt, but still beat a skunking.

We were out yesterday as well.Got our schoolie bft within 7 minutes of lines in at the Mudhole,so we headed East in search of a white marlinAfter a few hours,we saw the water temp drop from 72,to 71,and finally to 70.As soon as we got in the 70 *,we start seeing flying fish running for their lives. We get to trolling, and saw a couple whites, but they weren't interested.
Sharked for a few hours where our lone mako pulled the hook, boatside.A few blues, and we headed back west to cooler water.Upon seeing a large piece of lumber(an 8 ft cedar 4x4)we put the spread back out, small feathers and clones, and circled back around to pass it.We didn't even get close to it when a reel starts singing. As we turn bach, its a big mahi outta the water about 6 feet.Beautiful fish.
We're wondering what may have happened if we stayed around the cooler water in the first place. After we got into the 70 degree water,it started going back up,all the way to 75,and all that water was absolutely dead.
