Well the votes not a vote.....yet........maybe...just maybe ....... all this (U.S. announcing supposed support for the CITES I) is a way to send exactly that message to ICCAT... probably not, but it will all come to light shortly......

I really hope they know what they are doing. Not only are they hurting jobs of the fisherman, tackle businesses, boat mechanics, etc, etc but they are also going to royally piss off Japan. Currently Japan is the largest holder of our debt from this economic hole we are in. So above and beyond our fishing issues here we could have some serious political aftermath on our hands here in a week or so.

    bottom line ?

This might be a dumb question but what is the bottom line for guys on the board here who fish for tuna recreationally ? Also, the charter caps who catch the occasional giant and want to put it on the truck ? What is going to happen ?

They won't allow us to fish for bluefin tuna.

My comments for the Tag a Giant loosers on Facebook.

Tag-a-Giant is an organization that appears to rely on fisherman to catch the fish they tag and release yet they are supporting a CITES listing? Sounds pretty hypicritical to me. With a CITES listing we probably won't be allowed to fish for tuna and therefore they won't be able to tag fish.

As i understand it (and please someone with more knowledge Chime in if i am not correct) the Cites listing is not only about banning international trade of BFT but it will also open up the door so to speak to getting any listed species put on endangered species list which would ban ALL fishing for said species. Rec or Comm.

there will be a fishery, probably just recreational and domestic sales only...

I understood it be mean that fishing would be allowed but with only domestic sales. Some numbers I was told were that the US imports about 550mt for domestic use. Last couple of season we have only caught around 200-250mt. So there would be a market but with a general lower price paid. Be interested to see if anyone else has any more info.

Who knows where this could go with the enviros if the listing is made official.
