    Chumtini Report: 08 OBMST

Fri, we set up S of Nantucket Shoals and drifted into Banana Bar. Tons of blue sharks, biggest we caught (and released) taped out at 93 and 101". It took Mike and I a couple tries to get a tape measurement at boat side. Not easy with all those sharp little teeth not to mention all the other blues swimming around the boat. I'd estimate Dunn's 8 footer at 300-350 lbs. She was a Fatty.

The blue sharks were continously around the boat. It got so rediculous, I broke out the flyrod and danced a couple around the rails. By noon, we decided to pick up and leave the area...and the slick.

We moved N along the break and found a temp and color break intersecting with a fog bank. It looked "whicked pissa" and reset the slick. That's when I saw it. It couldn't be, not now, not in the middle of a freakin SHARK tournament. And sure enough, bluefin tuna busting and airing out. I couldn't believe it. We sat and watched schools of tuna around the boat while we sat and chunked fish guts. I'm convinced, this was in hell and about to go out of my mind.

We had ONE shot at a $$-fish, saw the whiptail flop and turn on a poor little bluefish. A quick zing and nothing. It didn't connect. We were out smahted.

Sat was more of the same. We continuted fishing along the break N of where we left off on Fri. SSTs showed two "humps" that lined up with a pair of "rabbit ear" contour lines along the 120' and last avail Chloro imagery. Again, set up on the warm side and slid into the cold on one of those rolling beam-to drifts. Nothing would turn us. 10 mile slick and more of the same...blueshark, after blue shark.

Will add some pics and stuff when I find my cam.

What boat were you on ? We fished that same area both days had constant action both days, released alot of large bluedogs some over 300 easy. Sat morning one hour into it we caught and released a thresher in high 200's to low 300's . We knew it wasnt the winner and decided to release.

I think it cruised our live bluefish for a good half hour before he ate it. Mono topshot was all chaffed for about a 100 feet.

How bout that full moon tide, i think we were drifting at 1.8 knots. At the end of day 2 we were in 66 ft/ 58.6 degree water still catchin big healthy blue sharks,

Great first experience for the OBMST, and thanks to chum for letting me be part of it. Nice calm seas the first day, not so much the second. I think for being the smallest boat in the tournament, we didn't fair to bad even though we didn't hang any fish. It was a succesful tournament for me, being I caught my biggest fish to date. Once again, thanks to chum and crew for letting me be a part of it.

Friday we were the first to leave Oak Bluffs around 2am and steamed way south. What we found was VERY warm 78 degree Cobalt blue water. We got to the spot at about 5am and immediatly saw a free jumping mako that was in the 500# class. Unfortunatly it was only 5am and we could not start fishing until 7am. That was the most agonizing 2 hours of my life. We stayed put in that spot and immediatly began chumming and fishing at 7 and hoping that the mako was still in the area. Long story short, The big mako never showed and all we caught that day was a 175# Dusky that was released boatside. We decided for Saturday to try and find cooler water and headed east from where we were on Friday. We found slightly cooler water and a break from 76 to 73 degree water near the Star and set up our slick there. We had our way with blue sharks all day into the 300 pound class but they just wasted our time while we waited for the money fish to show. We could have caught alot more blue dogs but did not want to waste hooks on them. Around 3 we had a nice 25 pound mahi enter the slick right off the transom and eat just about everything I tossed at it. It must have eaten 10 pounds of chunks I threw it. Unfortunatly we did not have a rod set up at the time or else he would have tasted great on the grill. All of a sudden the mahi disapeared and for all the right reasons, a 250 pound class mako or porbeagle came into the slick and ate a few chunks and quickly dissapeared. It never got close enough to make the proper identification. We tried pitching multiple different baits at it but they were ignored every time. We tried to make that fish eat right down to the last seconds left in the tournament with no avail.

Congrats on the thrasher. We were on my Pursuit CC working N along the 65F from Banana Bar up to 41-00. From talking with a few folks, it sounds like the theme was blue. One guy told me he was sitting with his back to the sea when a bluedog chased his bluefish out of the water. The little chopper hit him up-side the head.

    Hey Guys,

We were north of you. We set up in 56 to 58 degree water at about 40:55 N and drifted in a northerly semi-circle. Friday was all the blue dogs you would ever want. We caught and released about 12 before we started playing with them. I got one on my little Accurate 665 and the jigging stick. That was a ball. This one wasn't huge, but it was fun none the less... We started thowing poppers just to play. Hand feeding them. One of the crew was grabbing them by the tail... It was fun, but no money fish.

Saturday we went further north to 48 degree water (around 41 N) thinking it was hero or zero time.... well it was zero time. Our drift was way to fast (2.5 to 3 knots). We washed over shoals and that really broke up the slick. So we picked up and worked our way west. At that point we were too shallow, but with a downeaster style boat, running anywhere fast wasn't an option. So we gave it a shot along a distinct half degree temp break (58 degrees to 58.5 change within 30 feet with foam on top). We ended the day there...

It was good to see Dan in the harbor (sun burned as always). We sat out the rest of the land activities. I am too old to party and fish hard all in the same weekend.

    Hey Guys,
It seems like we all had the same idea. Friday we fished just east of Tylers gap and drifted into the cooler water. We got covered up with Blue dogs all day also. We did release a small mako ~ 150lbs and lost one that would have definitely put us on the board. We got 3 good jumps close to the boat and estimated it between ~300-400 lbs. Unfortunately, the circle hook must have been stuck in the hinge of the jaw and straightened it out .
Day two we went a few miles south to some other structure but again had blues all day and one thresher that came in and disappeared.

Chum...I think I saw you running in on Sat? Did you see a blue hull 45' Buddy Davis?
